X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Movie Posters Are Cause For Reflection

20th Century Fox has released two character one-sheets for Matthew Vaughn's upcoming film, X-Men: First Class.

I love the design on these. Simple yet evocative. The more I see from this film, the more excited I get.

Comments

  1. man those are super cool

  2. What a total 180 from about two months ago.

  3. The first Phantom Menace poster did something similar.

  4. Way to depress us all, Josh

  5. “Before he was Professor X, he was Mr Tumnus”

  6. @lmiller31  Regardless, that was a great poster.

  7. @josh  – And we all know how that ended up, I know this movie will be the same… I don’t know what everyone is excited about

  8. Those are really sharp posters.

  9. i’m not a fan of these tag-lines, they’re lame, but that aside, the posters are pretty cool, definietely reminiscent of the anakin episode 1 posters! really looking forward to this, think it’ll be fun, just wish they’d stop being so insistant on aligning the continuity of this film with the others!

  10. There’s a lot of great things going on here, besides the reflection. Notice the sun coming out behind xavier and the darkness creeping in on erik. some more foreshadowing than the reflection provides.

  11. I like these posters. They’re not bad at all. Definitely excited for this movie.

  12. A-

  13. The Magneto variant is a little muddy for my tastes. Moody lighting AND vignetting AND sideways rain AND bluring AND mysterious black tendrils (seriously, what’s going on back there?)… AH! Too much. Love the setting though. And the Xavier one is lovely. Dramatic angles for the win!

  14. I forget the name of the guy who’s playing Magneto, but judging from the trailer he looks to be fantastic in the role.  I’m really looking forward to this, but I am ready to admit this may be another X-Men 3.  This film does have a superior director, however, so I have some faith it won’t be a complete stinker.

  15. @josh  it was. That poster was probably the best thing about that particular installment

  16. did the logo change? it seems like the lockup is a bit different. Interesting art direction on these with the HDR/Cross Processed style imagery. Kind of a 180 from the previous teasers. The reflections work well even if they are an overused idea.

  17. On second look, I’ve noticed the logo and wish I hadn’t. Gratuitous lens flare, feels cut off, particularly the N and E, screwy kerning, strokes that aren’t uniform and… rainbows? What is going on down there? Fingers crossed that was whipped up for these posters and not the final design.

And Magneto’s puddle has apparently eaten the sun. Sorry I just hate that one. Still way excited for the film though!!!

  18. @Josh Yeah, but Matthew Vaughn didn’t direct Phantom Menace. Instead he directed Layer Cake.

  19. @itsbecca  -why are you critiquing kerning on a movie poster!?!? they don’t pay attention to such things in that business. they’re all too busy photoshopping to worry about details like that. I do think the un-uniform strokes is due to the fact that that the logo bulges at the center. Its not design unless is has 10 effects applied to it and its not a logo unless its made from Trajan or Bank Gothic!!!

  20. @itsbecca those are trees.

  21. @itsbecca  Pretty sure those are branches, not tendrils… But yeah, that is one hella busy image.

  22. Great posters. Really getting excited abou this movie.

  23. i feel dense, I must have seen that star wars poster hundreds of times and never noticed the shadow XD

  24. @WeaklyRoll they do look branch-esque… I’ll give you that. But why is there a creepy black troll forest growing out of the middle of a concentration camp building’s roof?

@wallythegreenmonster but how will it look embroidered?!

  25. Before I was an asshole I wasn’t.

  26. @itsbecca I’m going to go with that this forest is a darkness that is going to take over eric turning him into magneto, much like the sun coming out of the clouds is Charles becoming the brightness that looks for harmony. all metaphorical of course.

  27. @itsbecca  Maybe the Nazi’s just aren’t into landscaping y’know? can’t be bothered trimming the trees when you have people to oppress

  28. Those are some cool posters.  I think the reflections are pretty neat.

  29. really cool, the trailer was impressive too. Seems lots of things about this film are kinda wacky though…I remain cautious

  30. Also like the Smallville poster with a reflection of Superman in the S shield under Clark:

  31. That is… some pretty hideous photoshop.  And can we get a comma, or at least two separate lines, for those taglines?  There’s a natural pause that’s just completely absent here.

The photos themselves are awesome, and I’m looking forward to the movie itself, but these are kind of hideous.

  32. New desktop background, set.  ðŸ™‚  That Xavier poster is boss.  Yes, I like it so much I have gone 50’s with my slang.

  33. didnt Smallville just do this?

  34. Not bad posters, but for Magneto it’s really hard to tell what his reflection is.

I know it’s suppose to be him in his outfit but it just looks like a man wearing a helmet with point ears.

  35. @Superyan ,@ccarney  –the reflection to show duality of a character is one of the most overused visual tropes out there. I attended a lecture a while back conducted by a very famous magazine creative director who put it at #3 or 4 on his “don’t ever show me that idea because i’ve seen it 1000 times” list. Its screams of needing to meet a deadline and going to the safe and formulaic.

  36. Blah, blah, blah….not really trying to stand as its own movie is it??

  37. yawn, snooze, sleep

  38. @josh  awh shit. Now I’m stuck in dystopia mode. 😛

  39. I’ll go see it.  Hell it could be X-Men done with sock puppets and my X-fanatic self would be there on day 1.

  40. Conceptually sound, but very poorly designed. The Episode I poster is indeed far superior.

  41. @TheNextChampion  Kind of looks like the Silver-Age Black Panther costume!

  42. I really like them. I think this movie looks really good and for some reason, is not getting nearly the hype that Thor and Captain America are, neither of which I have any real desire to see.

  43. I like the images. Not crazy about the taglines.
