WonderCon 2012: Waid and Samnee Take Flight with the ROCKETEER

This summer, everybody’s favorite hood ornament is headed back to the stratosphere in an all new mini from IDW. The first big story out of WonderCon 2012 is the pitch perfect pairing of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee on a four-issue Rocketeer yarn! These mark the first full-length adventures for Dave Stevens’ retro-cool character in over a decade. Last year’s anthology series boasted some exceptional talent including Darwyn Cooke, Mike Allred and Kurt Busiek, but if there was ever a team to don the helmet and jetpack and take off an extended Rocketeer adventure, it’s this one.

Not sure if anything else out of Anaheim can top this one. If Waid brings the same fancy-free panache to his take on Cliff Secord as he’s delivered in the pages of Daredevil, the altitude should be just right. As for Samnee, he’s perfectly suited to take the franchise through a perfect barrel roll. Here’s hoping those four issues turn into a more permanent fixture to the comics skyline.

  30. Now I’ve gotta pay attention to IDW when pre-ordering too. Man, too many companies to comb through. Will someone remind me in a month or two when pre-ordering for this starts? I’ll probably forget by then.

  31. I am looking forward to this. I love the retro feel of the Rocketeer. Waid is an amazing writer. Should do very well with this mini. Hopefully we get an ongoing series.
