Warner Brothers Reveals Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Roles in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

We’re gonna file this one in the same drawer as “Revenge of the Jedi.”

Today Warner Brothers issued a press release confirming the involvement of Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in next year’s The Dark Knight Rises. Nobody’s been able to agree on just who Gordon-Levitt who will be playing, and we even received unconfirmed reports that he’d feature as the Holiday Killer. Now WB offers their own official casting notice:

“Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.”

We remind you that Liam Neeson was cast as Henri Ducard for his decidedly more complex role in Batman Begins. Wouldn’t “Gotham City cop” or “Philanthropic Wayne Enterprises board member” make excellent covers? Just sayin’.

Excellent use of the smoke screen pellet in your utility belt, WB marketing associate!

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters in July 2012.

Comments

  1. Is it just me, or does Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character description sound like he’s going to end up getting killed in a horrible, horrible way?

  2. I’m going to say that the Levitt casting is true. Cause in ‘Dark Knight’ we all though Anthony Michael Hall was going to be a big role but in the end it was just a minor role.

For Cotillard, I think that’s going to be a front to be Talia Al Ghul. Get in close to Bruce, possibly a romance, and BAM! Bane all over his ass.

  3. Oh, and her name is Miranda? #chaospowers

  4. So, Miranda Tate is totally code for Talia al Ghul, right?

  5. I hope the theater sound is tweaked because I can’t understand a word that chick says.  I say that as a person who has been in 28 countries and knows 2 languages.  Seriously, maybe it was just Public Enemies and the way it was filmed, but I can’t understand her.

  6. It only took them what? 2 months to confirm this? Haha. I smell some misdirection with that casting news though, but I’m willing to play along. Even if those roles are true I’m down with it, those two are an exciting edition to the cast!

  7. So he is playing a non Harvey Bullock Harvey Bullock? Weirdies.

Lots of heavy hitters in this film, hope, nay pray, it pans out.

  8. I’m gonna open with the usual preface:
I love/respect/trust/masturbate to Christopher Nolan as much as any intelligent movie buff/Batman fan.

But this is both frustrating and weird for me personally. I’ve wanted Cotillard for Selina Kyle since Dark Knight came out. I wanted her in the role for so long that I couldn’t possibly accept anyone else. After Hathaway was cast I quickly my piece with it. She’s both talented and attractive. I can live with it. But now what we have is a situation where my top casting pick for a character that is very close to my heart in the movie, but not as the character I was privately lobbying for her to play. So I could see Hathaway performing competently as Selina, and then in the next scene see the actress I’ve had in mind for 2+ years. Weird. That’s never happened in all my years of watching movies.

As far as speculation goes. The Talia theory is both intriguing and sound. Let’s not forget about that actor being cast as a “flashback” Ra’s (allegedly). That lends a lot of weight to the Talia theory. And I wouldn’t mind it at all. If I can’t have her as Selina, I’ll definitely take her as Talia. And it’d be a nice bow to tie around Nolan’s franchise, solidfying Ra’s al Ghul as Bale Batman’s nemesis. Which is awesome IMO.

As for Gordon-Levitt, beats the shit outta me. I was really digging the Alberto idea. But I like the guy so I don’t really care who he plays. (I’m still not ruling him out as a Joker recast).

  9. This is the guy who made Inception. I’m not even gonna try and guess what he’s up to.

  10. I don’t believe this castingnews for a second. First of all Miranda Tate just so happens to be the name of the oldest of the four daughters of Queenscryche frontman Geoff Tate & John Blake was the name of the controverisal football coach of the University of Oklahoma & more recently UNC, in which he “retired” last September from. So these 2 names are too much of a coincidence to have me fooled into thinking that these are the actual names of the characters these two are playing. Especially since they are such high profiled actors (definitely more so than Anthony Michael Hall) & to have them play background characters that are not even characters in the comics, sounds a little too ludicrous if you ask me. I bet that Marion is Talia & Levitt is Alberto.

  11. So Catwoman is the only new main character to look forward too?  Bleh.

  12. yes, because they arent in the comics means their characters must be unimportant and a waste of our time.

  13. For some reason, I kept thinking “John Blake is a cover name for someone” can I can’t righly recall who…

  14. I think slashfilm.com might be my favourite website ever!!

  15. Wouldnt it be funny if what was previously reported about hathaway WAS the fakeout and cotillard is catwoman and hathaway is talia…

  16. @PraxJarvin  Catman.

  17. I think these guys are AWESOME actors, but i cant see hathaway as catwoman

  18. @checkmate- agreed.

  19. It’s got to be difficult for Nolan. he has to include every actor from his previous film in his next one. In two movies time, he’ll have to do a musical so he can fit them in the chorus somewhere

  20. really a cop? is anyone really going to buy that? Can I hope that “cop” means cover for black mask becuase levitt as Mask teamed up with “wayne board Member” aka talia would be awesome. Also hardy as Bane  working for either the league or mask would make a hell of a lot more sense.

  21. Bullshit!!
Why be all secretive? We knew that Heath Ledger was going to be the Joker and we all went to see it and he kicked ass. So why not say who is who and build some more excitement!!

  22. @ccarney  Would you have wanted to know that Liam Neeson was really Ra’s al Ghul?

(Also we are all just assuming that there is a secret. There may not be one.)

  23. i just realised that Nolan is a racist though, he doesn’t re-cast the australian’s he has worked with. where’s Guy Pierce, Hugh Jackman and Heath Legder’s role in this movie, hmmm?

  24. @conor  At this point is there really any twist left? My 8 year old saw me reading this  article and said “Is that Damiens mom, Talia al Ghul? Maybe they will bring back Rauls!” He a big Batman fan and loves this series. In this movie shouldn’t Batman be getting chased?

  25. @ccarney  We have no idea at this point. It’s all speculation.

  26. i still want robin in the movie. not dick or tim, but JASON!!

  27. oo oo oo!! wasnt Levitt that kid from third rock from the sun?

  28. @Edward – Ledger might be a problem.

  29. I heard some people go full on conspiracy theory and say “John Blake? It spells JOKE, totally code for Joker”, but I’m not sure.
I doubt that they’re roles are just as simple as they sound.
