Top 5: Women Who Wooed Wolverine

Marvel’s original anti-hero Wolverine has long been considered the best there is at what he does, and as it turns out he does more than just fight. Beneath that hairy exterior and the adamantium-laced skeleton beats a heart like any other, and he’s shared it with numerous people, with today’s selections topping that list.

5. Melita Garner

Although she’s the newest addition on Logan’s list of loves, Melita Garner has made an impact for being a normal girl sucked into Wolverine’s far-from-normal life. Introduced by Jason Aaron in Weapon X: Wolverine, she makes a living working as a reporter for the San Francisco Post and tries to balance a dating life with Logan.

4. Squirrel Girl

This romance is wrapped in more mystery than Wolverine’s true origin did for years. First Introduced by Brian Michael Bendis in the pages of New Avengers, only time will tell if we ever get the true story. An interesting fact is that she is amongst the few people to know Logan’s true first name, ‘James’.

3. Jean Grey

The ultimate in unrequited love, it wasn’t for lack of trying. While Jean Grey was eternally attached to Scott Summers first as girlfriend and later as wife, Logan made his feelings known to both of them on several occasions. In a recent issue of Wolverine that delved into his mind, it was revealed that the memory of Jean remained a key part of Logan’s psyche years after her death.

2. Silver Fox

As one of Logan’s earliest loves, Silver Fox is one of many threads that the mutant went after in trying to suss out his true origin. As it turns out, he lived with her in the early 20th century in a remote Canadian cabin, and also worked as part of Team X with Logan and Sabretooth.

1. Mariko Yashida

Although more famous for her death than her years romantically-attached to Logan, Mariko Yashida remains the chief romance in Wolverine’s life to this day. The daughter of a Japanese crime family, her romance with Logan is forbidden until she ascends to rule the family. After an attempted marriage ceremony was ruined by an evil mutant (you know how that is!), they remained close and their relationship was ended only when she was poisoned by a rival crime boss.

Comments

  1. I think Diamondback should have made the list for sleeping with Wolverine while she was in Dazzler’s body after the two of them were mind-swapped in an old Uncanny X-Men Annual. That left an indelible mark on teenage me.

  2. No Itsu? C’mon, they had a kid together!

  3. I’d add Rose to this list over Squirrel Girl. Sure that was a funny aside in New Avengers, but really there’s been nothing more than a throwaway line about Squirrel Girl. His relationship with Rose (from ORIGIN) was what led to his attraction to red heads 😀

  4. We couldn’t add Tyger Tyger, Rose, or Yukio to this list??  I know Yukes and Tyger are more of an FTF thing, but they deserve an honorable mention.  How has Logan not banged She-Hulk??  That’s a panel I want to see.

  5. Is it me, or is Squirrel-Girl is the character that they wanted the Sentry to be, but without all the sucking?

  6. Hm.  Bad editing, or a Dinah Washington reference?  Is she is, or is she ain’t Logan’s baby?

  7. mikegrahm6- i would add Rose too
but to be fair he wasn’t “wolverine” then
That being said Jean has to be tops.

Squirrel girl was a nice touch though.

  8. I think Jean is the top one personally.  I hope when she finally does return she goes to Logan’s side.  I think that would make for interesting dynamics.

  9. What about the countless underage girls that he hooks up with?

    We can’t ignore this aspect!

  10. @TheNextChampion  There’s a media blackout on those “alleged” underage girls Mr. Logan may or may not be acquainted with until certain matters can be resolved in court.

  11. I love how it’s possible to use that picture of Jean and Logan with their tongues down each other’s throats and call it ‘unrequited.’ Only on the X-Men!

  12. I think Charlemagne should have been on this list. Although it should have been spelled correctly, not how I spelt it. Does anyone else remember her?

  13. Where the fuck is Rose?

  14. How the heck can a one-note, poorly-thought-out Bendis quip outrank Rose or Melita? Wolverine’s even had more of a relationship with Domino or Mystique or Yukio. The Squirrel Girl stuff is just a random aside. Yet it ranks only one notch below Jean Grey!?!?

This is what’s wrong with comics online journalism/article-writing today. This fascination with and promotion of bizarre, superficial non sequiturs. It’s like we’re elevating one-off funny gags to the level of things that matter and things that have meaning.

Seriously, we’re in the midst of the first normal relationship that Wolverine’s had in thirty years, but a one-note “Squirrel Girl” reference out-ranks that. Why? Because Squirrel Girl is random and funny, and with the mindset that we have now in the comics community, we always have to be endlessly fascinated with little touches that don’t make sense and don’t have any depth. But gosh they’re just so silly.

“Only time will tell” if we’ll actually learn more about the backstory of Wolverine and Squirrel Girl? No, it’s just another stupid Bendis moment that will never go anywhere and just seems really random. Readers should pick up on these things by now. He’s usually a good writer, but he has this habit of projecting faux depth onto this work sometimes, and this is one of those times.

But it’s funny and mindnumbing, so let’s make a meme of it already. That’s a healthy way for a community to behave, constantly.

  15. Great list, but I think at least one of his wives should have been on the list. There wasn’t any love in the marriage, but no mention of Madame Hydra?

  16. Also, I agree with froggulper. I know this was just a fun list, but a one-off Bendis comment shouldn’t rank above Logan’s first love, the woman Logan had a child with, or even Logan’s most normal relationship. If anything, Squirrel Girl should have been like an honorable mention

  17. mystique in the form of jean grey.

  18. @froggulper  Squirrel Girl defeated Thanos and Dr. Doom. Now she has defeated much more qualified people to be on the list. It’s her super-power. Logan was in love with Charlemagne. She came to him so she could commit suicide in the way of his killing her painlessly, rather than be tortured to death by evil spies, and he loved her so much, he couldn’t do it properly. she had to trick Spider-Man into killing her, the ONLY time he has ever taken a life. It was a tragic, beautiful story, my favorite Wolverine story of all time, one I read as a kid that blew me away and cemented my love of comics. She should at least rate a mention on the list.

Although i think Squirrel Girl is awesome, so i’m not going to get worked up over it.

  19. TNC-

Definitley something happened with Jubilee at one point.

  20. Yikes, by Frog’s and Fett’s reactions, I think it’s safe to assume there will be a fan picket/protest outside the IFanboy SDCC booth right after the DC protest. 🙂

  21. Forget protesting DC. The iFanboy picket for this list is priority number 1. 🙂

  22. I always hated the idea of Wolverine and Jean Grey.

  23. I assume the references to underage girls are in jest, as I can’t recall a time when this character appeared to cross a line from mentor to pedophile. But maybe I just missed something?

  24. @rwpos  He isn’t a pedophile, but in comics/film/cartoons/etc he hooks up with a lot of teenage girls as a friend.

Hell he did it again this week in Schism.

  25. @TheNextChampion  It’s a character trait. He is yearning for a family and tanks on a fatherly role to young girls in need of a strong male figure to look up to. He did it with kitty and has done it over and over again, but it was never remotely creepy. Unless people WANT to read it that way, I guess.

  26. @JohnVFerrigno Well some people, like myself, think it’s creepy. Heck a short story in Strange Tales II opens up with a joke on the subject.

  27. @TheNextChampion  If you think an old man taking on a protective/mentor role to a young girl is creepy, with zero inappropriate behavior to make it so, that is you bringing your own sexual insecurities and lack of proper adult role models to the table. If Logan has ever been written as having any motivation behind his constant taking in of a young female sidekick other than his desire to have a daughter, I’ve certainly never read it.

  28. @TheNextChampion  Firstly Bravo for coming up with such an original insight. I don’t think I have ever heard anyone mention that years old joke before.

Secondly, i work as a teacher and don’t really feel the need to bone girls with pimples and braces… but unfortunely, as a teacher, you really have to be aware of the precieved appearence of anything remotely in that area

  29. what is wolvie’s true age around? wasn’t he a soldier while captain america was battling the nazis? the guy has to be around 100.
