‘Thor 2’ Gets a Villain and He’s a Doctor: Christopher Eccleston

You probably know Christopher Eccleston from Doctor Who, or Heroes, or maybe even Elizabeth, but soon, the Odinson will know him as Malekith the Accursed in Thor: The Dark World, the sequel to Thor. You might recognize Malekith from Walt Simonson’s run on Thor. You might recognize Thor from being in one of the most successful movies of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers.

And that’s about all we know at the moment. Alan Taylor is the director of the new Asgard adventure, and he’s got a hell of a resume, having directed Deadwood, as well as the pilots of Mad Men, and Bored to Death. He also directed six episodes of Game of Thrones. The movie is set to be released in November of 2013.

The character Malekith is a dark elf, and you can find a lot more about him here, if you’re not terribly familiar with the norms of dark elves.

  1. That’s a pretty healthy TV resume. RIP Deadwood and Bored to Death.

    • Bored to Death felt to me like it was always on the chopping block. I really liked it but realized it wasn’t quite great enough to transcend its niche target audience. Deadwood on the other hand was ridiculously good and I hope that there is some parallel Earth where I got to enjoy six seasons and a movie of that glorious piece of work.

More on topic: That is a impressive resume however I never really know what to think of directors that primarily do TV. I wonder sometimes how much creative control they really have.

  2. Wow they are really going all out on The Lord Of The Rings similarities with the Dark Elves thrown into the mix. The 1st one was more of a subtle comparison, but now people are going to pretty much associate the Thor movies as Marvel’s version of The Lord Of The Rings. Not saying its a bad thing, just saying its becoming a bit more obvious now. If they add Surtur into the mix with some flames then it would all come full circle, IMO.

  3. Malekith was also in a episode of Avengers: EMH (Season 1, Ep 20).

    I like this casting.

  4. Fantastic.

  5. Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Love it. My most anticipated Marvel movie aside from GotG.

  6. “Why does Malekith have a Northern accent?”

“Lots of realms have a north!”

  7. Last weekend I saw ‘Shallow Grave’ which I recommend to anyone who likes Eccleston but haven’t seen his early work. That and Danny Boyle….funny how their first movie is amazing right off the bat.

I do like Eccleston so I am in favor of this news. Although I would like to see, eventually, on how this is going to look in the long run.

  8. This is good news. Hopefully one of the secrets of Thor 2: The Dark World is that there is a surprise third antagonist and that threat comes in the shape of Kurse: http://goo.gl/ie86b

After all Malekith did manipulate Kurse years ago to fight Thor way back during Walt Simson’s seminal run on the title.

If this happened, my mind would be blown.

  9. DOCTOR!!!!

  10. I’m a little worried because it doesn’t have the best writers attached. Well actually I never saw their other movies My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Fantasic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer so maybe those are really well written movies and my fears are unfounded.
