The Onion Really Gets Green Lantern

The Onion brings it's cutting and incisive satire to the Green Lantern movie and the furor that does not seem to quite exist.

"It's a thing come true."

  1. YEAH! GREEN LANTERN! WHY NOT?

DC is going to burst into tears any minute.

I was really wanting to see THE FLASH and JUSTICE LEAGUE… oh well…

  2. Damn, this was really funny. I know I’m excited for the adventures of Greg Lantern!

  3. Spot on.

  4. “This is a thing come true for me.”

  5. Thanks, Onion News Network, for my new Twitter account: @GregLantern

With my power ring, I can create whatever I can imagine…as long as I already have it on hand.

  6. “While on paper, Ryan Reynolds should make a decent Hal Jordan, his limited range as an actor is painfully obvious as he’s essentially playing the same character he’s played in every other movie only this time wearing CG spandex. He gives it a fine college effort to bring his usual charms to the character, but he’s no Robert Downey Jr. and the dialogue he’s given does little to make Hal likeable”.

It was to be expected.  Marketing made the movie look like trash since day 1.  Now Rotten Tomatoes only have 24% freshness.

    I knew it.

Still going to watch it though.

  7. @Lexavi80 Yeah that I was fearing since I first saw marketing. Deep down I knew it wasn’t going to be great but was holding out for some great surprise come the first reviews. Now the initial reviews have crushed that small hopeful spirit for GL and other JLA related movies.

But yeah, totally still going to watch it though.

I’ve just got to pray that it’ll be better than Avatar: The Last Airbender and Jonah Hex…

  8. i am outraged! I can’t tell if this is serious ot not. rraggh !

  9. At this point I hope that despite the reviews, it makes a lot of bank (if only to ensure future DC movies)… but unless this is TRANSFORMERS that probably isn’t going to happen.

  10. From IGN’s review. Ouch.

“Last summer gave us the DC bomb that was Jonah Hex and this summer offers the colossal disappointment that is Green Lantern. The epitome of spectacle over substance, Green Lantern is a cosmic mess and a huge letdown given the source material it had to draw from. Indeed, X-Men: The Last Stand and Wolverine are better than Green Lantern. This was DC and Warner Bros.’ best bet yet at establishing a deeper bullpen of big screen superheroes beyond Batman and Superman, but the film is bad enough to possibly kill any hope for ever seeing The Flash or Justice League.”

  11. Man the reviews keep coming and they keep getting worse.

Will I have the same mentality as I did with Green Hornet? In that, I may walk out before the film ends?

  12. oh Onion, you are so much fun!

  13. fantastic!

  14. “Greg Lantern is sure to be a big hit.” Hilarious!

  15. Just got out of Green Lantern; it’s really bad. Deathly dull, poorly done action set-pieces and the effects resemble Mortal Kombat on Genesis.

  16. An Onion spot actually makes for brilliant free advertising, no one takes the Onion seriously but LOTS of people read it. I would not get my panties in a twist over this … now this …

    oy …

  17. Do they show footage of the movie in this onion video?

  18. just a little too inside baseball.

anyone who finds this funny Is a green lantern fan.

anyone who isn’t thinks this is serious.
    and neither really care.

  19. I have been looking for one positive review of grean lantern and can’t find one.

  20. Oh now it’s down to 20%!

    I can’t wait for Roger Ebert’s review.

  21. So so funny. The Onion always nails the zeitgeist.

  22. I really don’t want to pay money for a bad movie. Will wait for certain key reviews and then decide, prabably be a no go though.

  23. These fake news thing are a bit strange to me. i get the whole satire thing but it’s still kinda lifeless like plastic soulless automatons. colbert and stewart seem to have much more fun in doing the exact same kinda thing though. hmmm.

  24. Hilarious.

  25. @srh1son  That would be the worst thing that could happen. It would be like giving a treat to the dog that just peed on your carpet. If what we’re hearing is true, I hope it bombs. Maybe then WB will realize that it takes more than copying a successful movie to create a hit…

  26. @Matrix  That’s called dry humor.

  27. Well now the film has jumped from 20% to a whopping 24% on rotten tomatoes.

I so cannot wait to watch the ‘horror’ that may befall me at the theater soon.

  28. It seems likely to me that a Green Lantern movie could simultaneously please Green Lantern fans while completely alienating everyone else.  I’m looking forward to it.

    * Fingers crossed that I’m right. *

  29. Indeed the movie had awful marketing from the begining, but even at the end I didn’t get excited.

@j206:  Green Lantern is worst than X-Men: Last Stand and Wolverine???.   O-U-C-H!!!!!

This weekend will be Super 8 then.

  30. Back down to 20% over at RT. Looks REALLY bad for DC with First Class and Thor on the same page at 87 & 77. Yeesh.

  31. Yup!.  And now that we are a few days from Transformers (that looks destructive), GL seems to be in a bad spot.

They deserve it.  That’s what happen when you don’t make justice out of a great character.
