The First Official THOR Trailer Harnesses the Power of Science AND Magic

We have seen grainier iterations of it before, but today Marvel has unleashed the first official Thor trailer.

In it, we see the bratty prince expelled from an ethnically diverse Asgard by Odin. Once on Earth, he smooches Natalie Portman and is interrogated by Sam Seaborn's FBI pal Agent Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. He is angry and has a large hammer, and he'll get to use that hammer against the rampaging Destroyer. Oh, and Loki's all skulky too.

Meteorology fans, take note. There are god storms

My favorite part: "In 3D! Also, 2D where available."

Either way, can't wait!

Be sure to check out the official THOR Movie Website for more godly like stuff!

Comments

  1. ahhh! how disappointing. I was hoping for something new:( oh well, more to come I’m sure.

  2. That looks fantastic! I wish the hammer looked heftier though.

  3. This looks good, but the lack of new footage feels like the producers are flipping the bird at the people who bootlegged the comic con trailer.

  4. This look’s awesome. Still can’t believe Hemsworth played Kirk’s father in Star Trek and now he is Thor. Way to go.

  5. This Is Awesome!

  6. Looks like fun. Though, I admit I’m gaining a liiiitle bit of apprehension for Chris Hemsworth as Thor… the few bits of dialogue I heard from him were a bit clunky.  Iron Man worked well partly because Robert Downey Jr. was such a strong presence. I worry that Hemsworth may fall flat amongst his co-stars. But I’m not hatin’ on it, fanboys. 😉 Just my one little worry…

Now, when’s the Captain America trailer coming?

  7. Here’s the thing. It’s free. The movie doesn’t come out until May. Relax.

  8. For ODIN. FOR ASGARD! Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins. What else shallith I needeth.

  9. @daccampo  That last reply wasn’t in response to you, but with regard to Hemsworth: I can understand the apprehension, but Thor’s kind of aloof as it is, so I don’t even know what to expect of a live action version. And, in fairness, anyone’s gonna sound weaker or less charismatic than RDJ. He’s an electric personality. It’s early yet, but i’m optimistic.

  10. Still looks like good fun!

  11. Looks better than the crappy Green Lantern trailer.

  12. The look is fantastic.  Very exciting.

  13. This looks so cool. Kirby and Simonson are ALL OVER this thing!
Plus it has just the right amount of Aussie in it!

  14. When he throws his hammer and hits the frost giant in the face and the hammer comes back?

    AWESOME.

  15. RIGHT?!

  16. So awesome! And when Odin strips him of the hammer it flies into Hopmins’ hands.
And I don’t know who Loki is but they got that casting right. Looks so much like the Ultimate Loki.

  17. THIS IS AWESOME. I CAN’T BELIEVE I LIVE IN A DAY AND AGE WHERE THIS SHIT IS POSSIBLE ON SCREEN.

  18. Well…this looks fantastic.

  19. This looks great. Fantastic. Thor is awesome.

  20. Nobody calls Hannibal Lecter an old man and a fool! This was awesome!

  21. @Paul I wasn’t being aprehensive about it, I was saying that he definitely has made his characters distinguishable. That’s a good thing. Sorry if I made it sound otherwise.

  22. Looks really really good.  And the same can be said about Chris Hemsworth. They pumped him up for this movie.   Rawr!

  23. @coleman  Wasn’t replying to you. I knew what you meant.

  24. Oops I read that wrong. I’m dumb. Disregard.

  25. OH YEAH! That was awesome!  2011 is gonna be a great year for superhero movies!

  26. Plus, the Destroyer looks so cool!

  27. Looks pretty awesome. And who knew ‘Stringer Bell’ was actually a Norse God. Take that Omar!

  28. Somehow the Asgard scenes remind me of something out of the 1980 Flash Gordon movie

  29. Can we not have this in 3D? Please? Pretty please?

I know it says ‘2D available’ but you know what? I don’t want any of this in 3D. Just stop the fad Hollywood. Please!

    End Rant.

Trailer looks awesome! Can’t wait for the film!

  30. @fnord  YES! I agree wholeheartedly.

  31. 2D please.

( sigh ) it looks aweSOME! Makes me lament the cancelation of Thor The Mighty Avenger, even more! ( is that possible? ) It would have been a great companion to the film.

  32. Also, the .2 seconds of Loki looks SAHWEET!

  33. THE DESTROYER!!! Until I saw the trailer, I was worried. Now, not so much.

I concur that it blows the Green Lantern trailer away!

  34. I hope I never give Anthony Hopkins reason to be angry at me. I just want his approval, maybe a grandfatherly pat on the head.

    Looks excellent.

  35. When those pics came out a couple months I was disappointed. Looked kinda cheesey.

Not any more!! Or should I say not any…THOR!

  36. This movie looks great, next year is looking really solid for movies.

PS. I already hate myself for saying this and I apolagize, but he was actually Josh Lymans friend.

  37. Sweet Jim-iny Christmas, that looked great!  I was sold the minute he slammed his hammer to the ground at the end.

  38. Just out of curiosity, does anyone really enjoy 3D? I know I don’t, and don’t really hear anyone clamoring for it. Jus’ wondering, y’know.

I’ll definitely try to catch this in 2d. I am an old man, and resist change.

  39. 2D all the way for me! Much more impressed with this than the Green Lantern trailer which I wasn’t expecting at all.

  40. Awesome trailer. People at WB should be kicking themselves for the GL trailer after seeing this one. This one makes me excited to see the movie, not fearful (Maybe Parallax made the Green Lantern trailer just to see use sweat?).

@ PaulMontgomery Nice West Wing reference. One of my faves, too.

  41. awsome trailer…just like the leaked one..but better..cant’y wait for a thunderstrike cameo….yeah i said it…thunderstrike in thor 3.

  42. Looks cool, but what I wonder: does this trailer do enough to put non-comic fans in seats?  I feel like there’s a lot of things people who are in the know think are cool, but to a non-comic fan, do they just see shit blowing up?  Do they walk away from the trailer knowing what the movie is about?  Does it intrigue them enough?  My hope is the answer is yes, but it’s hard to tell.

I think with the GL trailer, it does a better job of setting up the story and showing more of the character chemistry, which is what the Iron Man trailers did with great success.  I’m not quite sure if this trailer captured that.  Only time will tell though.

  43. @Neb  The trailer is entirely about setting up the story of the film: Thor gets cast out of his world into ours. Proceeds to be bad-ass and hit things with a hammer.

And boy does he hit things with a hammer.

  44. I will wait for the dvd.

  45. I just Mjolnired.

  46. I want some Bathory in the sound track

  47. I hope I can see it in 2D at a good theater. I can’t see 3D, so paying extra so I can wear clunky glasses just to make the movie look 2D for me is not something I relish. Like TNC said, Hollywood needs to stop the fad. It’s the movie equivalent of all those foil-embossed-hologram-die-cut-glow-in-the-dark covers of the ’90s.

  48. Not that most aren’t, but the trailers a bit focus tested. Given the fact that there’s a black Asgardian it seems like the whole movie may be a bit focus tested. I’ll watch it anyway. I’m sure there will be some good parts and some stuff that is worthy of mockery.

  49. I’ve already seen the crazy extended teaser that was at SDCC, but that does not mean this doesn’t get me all excited in my bikini area for a Thor movie. WANT!

  50. @markish  True, I just wonder if it’s enough to get people in the seats.  The jokes in the GL trailer as well as the character moments with Ryan Reynolds will get people in the theaters.  Then again, Transformers 2 made a bagillion dollars, and it was mostly just stuff getting wrecked by big action.

Either way, I’m excited for the movie.

  51. Uhhhhh I must not have seen the same trailer cause the one I saw looks God awful , phony looking weapons , armor made of plastic and Athony Hopkins sleepwalking through his lines . This just looks stupid and very generic . Its making me rethink the whole idea of super hero movies . Especially after the whole Iron Man 2 mess . Maybe Chris Nolan is the only guy who knows how to do it right .

  52. Trailer is awesome and I can’t wait for the movie.  I wonder when this is going to start playing on tv.

  53. Pretty neat trailer, this is gonna be alot of fun.

  54. @KRYPTOTIM  Why do you hate fun?

  55. bug thumbs up

  56. can’t wait there should be a second trailer in a month or so , well at least i know what i will be doing on may 6

  57. I’ve never really been very interested in Thor as a character and have no familiarity with the Thor-verse, so the Trailers are kind of interesting for me to watch. It looks promising so far. The mix of epic fantasy world with down here on earth feels a bit weird but we’ll see…

The reviews will make the decision for me as to go theatre or netflix.

  58. @Neb –not everyone who reads comics, reads or is familiar with THOR. My take away: After the expulsion from Asgard sequence its just stuff blowing up. I do agree that the GL trailer tells more of a story to non familiars.

  59. Wicked! the GL trailer wasn’t bad but this wasn’t sure got me a lot more excited for the movie than GLs

  60. Stringer Bell AND The Destroyer?! YES!

  61. Awesome. The woman playing Sif looks dead on.

  62. OH MY (Asgardian) GODS! That looks f-ing awesome!!! Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America next year…must….not….freak…out. Batman has always been my number one, but 2-4 are getting their own flicks next year!! WOW!

  63. I like how the Asgard castle is basically the cathedral in Iceland…

  64. Haha awesome!

Loved the line: “Oh no. This is earth isn’t it?”

  65. The MOST awesome thing about that clip? Sir Anthony Hopkins playing a kickass Odin & putting Thor in his place!!

  66. is this why they had to cancel my boyfriend Thor ?
Due to exceptional similarities creating creative conflict !

  67. Hi! My name’s Kris and this movie looks lame.

  68. I just have one thing to say: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

  69. Looks well made, but the Asgard scenes just didn’t scream Asgard to me.  I think they could’ve used a heftier dose of Kirby mixed in for good measure.

All of the character stuff looked good, except for the costuems, which could’ve also done with a bit more Kirby in ’em.

  70. Heimdall!!!

  71. I heard Hemsworth’s aussie accent everytime he spoke. Also am convinced they are recycling 1981’s Flash Gordon’s costumes & sets. I predict box office smash , but a total fail executionwise.

  72. Impressive!!!!!.   Looks better than I’ve ever imagine!.

I reckon Green Lantern is fu**ed.

  73. @k5blazer  The actor who played Omar Little (from the Wire) showed up in the Incredible Hulk.  It was a very small part.  One can hope that Stringer, Omer and Prop Joe will somehow show up over the rainbow bridge

  74. Unless Thor is fighting Green Lantern… I don’t think I see the relevance to GL. (Unless they have the same release weekend, in which case I guess they are kind of fighting and now we all gotta pick sides and stuff.  I’ll be over here on the thunder god’s side.)
