The Best of the Week in Panels – 05.11.2011

You need to get a real panel, Antoine!

Flashpoint #1

By Geoff Johns, Andy Kubert, Sandra Hope, Alex Sinclair, & Nick J. Napolitano

In an issue with some serious art concerns, there was still a lot to like, especially this incredibly dynamic panel of Cyborg performing an acrobatic rescue. I always love the use of multiple character drawing in one panel to show movement, and you can really feel the force of Cyborg's landing.

Chew #27

By John Layman & Rob Guillory

This is a really great example of exactly who Toni Chu is and her effect on the world. It's also an upending of the trope of the surly police (or what have you) captain, not only for the fact that he's Indian, but also because he can't help but love her. The art and story are working in perfect harmony. But above all, it's funny.

— Josh Flanagan

FF #3

By Jonathan Hickman, Steve Epting, Rick Maygar, Butch Guice, Paul Mounts, & Clayton Cowles

Now THIS is a symposium that I'd like to attend.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Hellboy: Being Human

By Mike Mignola, Richard Corben, & Dave Stewart

This is elegance in comic book form. What you're looking at here is the crux of the whole series for some of the main characters in Hellboy's world. You are what you want to be. Just make it that way. Man, I miss Roger. This is why I read read these books.

— Josh Flanagan

Batman Incorporated #6

By Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham, Nathan Fairbairn, & Pat Brosseau

This is some fantasticly paced panel to panel transitioning.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Undying Love #2

By Tomm Coker & Daniel Freedman

The vampires stuck swirly straws in their victims. That is twisted.

— Josh Flanagan

John Byrne's Next Men #6

By John Byrne, Rhonda Pattison & Neil Uyetake

Who the devil indeed. Delightfully madcap.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Comments

  1. The “Q & A to follow the main presentation” in FF#3 made me laugh out loud when I first read it.

  2. I LOVE symposia!

  3. Last page of Batman Inc. was pretty stellar too.

  4. those symposia are always so bland…I hope the workshops make it worth it

  5. I wanted to cheer at that moment in Inc. #6. I didn’t, but I wanted to.

The Relationship between Toni Chu and her captain was great throughout the entire issue. Loved it.

I’m not reading Hellboy anymore, but that is a beautiful set of panels.

    Good stuff.

  6. What were the serious art concerns in Flashpoint…?

Symposium, you say? If there’s a free buffet, count me in.

  7. @GloriousGodfrey  The serious concerns were that it was wildly inconsistent and on the whole not very good.

  8. That’s actually Valeria’s big plan to kill Annihilus. Space bugs from the Negative Zone just can’t resist symposia.

  9. Yeah, I really dug that last two-page spread of Batman, Inc. Gorgeous issue, entirely. That FF panel still makes me laugh out loud.

  10. Everytime I listen to Jonathan Hickman in an interview I think
Wow what a cool guy – great ideas I am on board for this.

Then I read his FF stuff and- I don’t know something isn’t quite working.

Both of these things happen consistently for me.

  11. I have to say, I’m not always a Hickman fan but he’s really nailing the “This is a bunch of insane academics with superpowers” thing in FF and I’m eating it up.

  12. That undying love panel is certainly creepy.

  13. Hmm.  I had to go re-read Flashpoint after reading this and, while I can pick out a few things about the art that were off, overall I thought it was fine and enjoyed it.

  14. The panel of the week is clearly Alfred tripping one terrorist and tazing another in the back.  CLEARLY.

  15. @Tork  I thought it was the heart warming Gordon scene mixed with the seagulss picking the guy’s face out in the same panel!

  16. Nope.  Ninja Alfred.

  17. Every time I read FF, I feel that Hickman is writing each issue especially for me.

  18. I thought the page from Punisher Max where Frank is being placed in his cell and then transitioning to him entering the door at home after Nam would surely make it.  There’s some great storytelling in that particular issue.

Love that Batman Inc. panel.  That issue was rife with great moments, but the one you featured here was a fist pumper.

  19. Hmm. I didn’t get get Flashpoint this week, but have been second guessing myself because I really love Andy Kubert, especially since he’s incorporated a much larger portion of his dad’s influence into his own work. Hearing about “serious art concerns” certainly makes me feel better.

  20. My favorite panel was in the very beginning of Hellboy with Roger reading ‘Of Mice and Men’.

It’s a nice moment but it’s also a bit creepy since the room is so barren and Corben just makes it creepy.

  21. Wait is that supposed to be Dick in that panel of batman inc

It sure doesn’t sound like Bruce with “joe average”

and it sure looks like Frank Miller Batman in the face.

I haven’t read the issue yet.

  22. @ericmci  It’s Bruce. “Joe Average” is the guy’s name.

  23. @queenrikki  He can’t be writing it especially for you as clearly, he is writing it especially for me.

  24. Hellboy: Being Human panel blew my mind! The coloring is tremendous………

  25. there is a great panel in the x-23 and Daken collision crossover.  In the final issue in Daken 9,  when  both characters stand there while a bomb goes off great art work in my opinion.

  26. While the “Q&A” line in FF was funny, when I first saw it I was hoping it was “Reception to Follow” or something along those lines. I really wanted to know what kind of diabolical refreshments would be served.

  27. I love the symposium panel. I love even more that Dr. Doom is hosting it in the Baxter building. What could have been the coup de grace would’ve been “Refreshments will be provided”. I would’ve loved to see what Doom would’ve thought were appropriate hors d’oeuvres to go along with his topic.

Also, the Chinese panel in Undying Love says, “What…!?!” I’m also guessing that the scene takes place in either Taiwan or Hong Kong?

  28. I am now very excited for Grant Morrison to create a “Batman of Pennsylvania”.

  29. @LucasEwalt  @azrael1213   The invite should have had one more line:

Chicken ______  Fish _______ (mark choice with X)

  30. That would make a great episode of Super Hero Squad! Doom talking about beating the Squadies!
