The Best of the Week in Panels – 05.01.2013

I never got to say goodbye to my father. There’s questions I would’ve asked him. I would’ve asked him how he felt about what his company did, if he was conflicted, if he ever had doubts. Or maybe he was every inch of man we remember from the panels. I saw young Americans killed by the very weapons I created to defend them and protect them. And I saw that I had become part of a system that is comfortable with zero-accountability.

Swamp Thing_20_Panel

Swamp Thing #20

By Charles Soule, Kano, Alvaro Lopez, Mathew Wilson, & Travis Lanham

The pain and desperation in Swamp Thing’s eyes is palpable.

Hawkeye #10

By Matt Fraction, Francesco Francavilla, & Chris Eliopoulos of Clayton Cowles

No, it’s fine–I didn’t need to sleep for the rest of the week.

World Finest_12_Panel

Worlds’ Finest #12

By Paul Levitz, Kevin Maguire, Rosemary Cheetham, & Carlos M. Mangual

It’s the grimace in the sixth panel that does it for me.

Indestructible Hulk_7_Panel

Indestructible Hulk #7

By Mark Waid, Walter Simonson, Andres Mossa, & Chris Eliopoulos

I want Mark Waid and Walter Simonson to do an on-going Thor/Hulk team-up book.

Green Arrow_20_Panel

Green Arrow #20

By Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino, Marcelo Maiolo, & Rob Leigh

I love the use of black and white in this series.

All New X-Men_11_Panel

All-New X-Men #11

By Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen, Wade Von Grawbadger, Marte Garcia, & Cory Petit

What a wonderful portrayal of claustrophobia and chaos. No wonder he quit the team.

Earth 2_12_Panel

Earth 2 #12

By James Robinson, Nicola Scott, Trevor Scott, Barbara Ciardo and Pete Pantazis, & Dezi Sienty

I’ve come around on all the detail that’s been added to Doctor Fate’s costume over the years. It’s such a strong costume design at its base that it doesn’t make a difference.

Ten Grand_1_Panel

Ten Grand #1

By J. Michael Straczynski, Ben Templesmith, & Troy Peteri

You don’t get cheated with Ben Templesmith’s pages.

  1. Thor and Hulk eye-to-eye in Indestructible Hulk was another really good one.

  2. That Green Arrow panel is awesome. It just looks raw! Never really liked him but I really need to pick this up.

  3. Think I’ll pick up Ten Grand. Looks good.

  4. Great pics!

I love how you can feel the tension and anxiety in the All-New X-Men scene, it’s very visceral.

The Hawkeye pic is just bad arse!

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – Earth 2 is AMAZING! The Writing and the Art are top notch! I wish more people read the title.

Side question: Are Nicola Scott and Trevor Scott related?

  5. That Earth 2 panel is my desktop now. Favorite thing in a long while.

  6. What about Superman punching himself in the face in Adventures of Superman #1? I was sure that would make it in!

  7. That was a great moment in Hulk where the Giants are bewildered with Hulk welding the hammer.

I think my favorite panel of the week was a minor, but key moment in Aquaman #19. When Aquaman blows the conch to get Topo you see a ripple in the water. That is such an amazing, detailed panel and it really impressed me with what Pelletier can do.

  8. A bit disappointed to see no Tradd Moore panels from Legends of the Dark Knight #8…………..c’mon lads
