The Best of the Week in Panels – 04.24.2013

I wanted this to be professional, efficient, adult, cooperative. Not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Panels did not see it that way… so he won’t be joining us for the rest of his life. We can go any way you want it. You can walk out of here or be carried out. But have no illusions. We are in charge. So, decide now, each of you. And please remember: we have left nothing to chance.

Fury MAX_11_Panel

Fury MAX #11

By Garth Ennis, Goran Parlov & Lee Loughridge

The withering exclamation point on one of the best two-character scenes written in some time.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Young Avengers_4_Panel

Young Avengers #4

By Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Mike Norton, Matthew Wilson, & Clayton Cowles

If ever one page summed up a title it’s this one.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Superman Family Adventures_12_Panel

Superman Family Adventures #12

By Art Baltazar & Franco

The best part of this is that Franco and Baltazar haven’t forgotten Aquaman’s sweet sideburns.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Scarlet Spider_16_Panel

Scarlet Spider #16

By Chris Yost, Khoi Pham, Terry Pallot, Victor Olazaba, & Antonio Fabela

Do you ever feel like the entire issue you’re reading was written because the artist said, “I want to draw Spider-Man fighting a giant armadillo on a horsey?” Actually, never mind. No artist has ever said, “I want to draw a horse, please.” For this alone, we honor Khoi Pham this week.

— Jim Mroczkowski

Jupiters Legacy_1_Panel

Jupiter’s Legacy #1

By Mark Millar, Frank Quitely, & Peter Doherty

In this panel we have a powerful psychic who has transported the consciousness of a dastardly villain to the psychic prison that he is still building. It was a brilliant touch to use the actual building blocks of a comic book page to show that psychic world being constructed.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Uncanny Avengers_7_Panel

Uncanny Avengers #7

By Rick Remender, Daniel Acuña, & Chris Eliopoulos

In a book filled with wonderful art from Daniel Acuña, the sweeping scenes featuring the Celestials were the best.

— Conor Kilpatrick

The Flash_19_Panel

The Flash #19

By Brian Buccellato, Francis Manapul, Marcio Takara, & Carlos M. Mangual

Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs…

— Conor Kilpatrick

FF_6_Panel

FF #6

By Matt Fraction, Joe Quinones, Laura Allred, & Clayton Cowles

This panel should be required in every comic book.

— Conor Kilpatrick

All-Star_Western_19_Panel

All-Star Western #19

By Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, Moritat, Andre Szymanowicz, & Rob Leigh

In an issue full of amusing fish-out-of-water moments, this jailed cowpoke made me laugh the most.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Uncanny X-Men_5_Panel

Uncanny X-Men #5

By Brian Michael Bendis, Frazer Irving, & Joe Caramagna

For some reason, I really want to watch The Lord of the Rings again.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Comments

  1. That quote was the first thing I thought of reading this week’s Flash. DieHard Barry helped me forget Manapul wasn’t penciling this issue.

And Young Avengers had so many panels I wouldn’t have minded seeing here, from the deservedly much-lauded double-age Family Circus spread to the page of just Cap and Thor, chillin’.

Lastly, totally agreed on the FF panel. Thought it would never happen due to the often deadly serious tone at DC, I would love a panel like that for the Watchtower in Justice League. I mean, where the hell IS that kitchen?

  2. That scene from Fury MAX was brilliant. I felt so bad for her. Nobody does dialogue quite like Ennis.

    • ^Agreed. I’m very sad to see this series go but this issue was one of the better ones. Every character’s dialogue was brilliant. In my review I mentioned that Fury and Ennis read your mind on that final panel… the line that still gets me is Pug, “Whenever you’re around him I can practically smell you.”
I read that and instantly thought, “DAAAMN!”

  3. Three words (maybe a sentence): Frazer Quitely Acuña.

  4. The panel of the stepford cuckoos smirking from Uncanny was one of my panels of the week.

  5. There were so many great panels in All-Star Western #19! Also it’s good to know that Booster still hasn’t learned his lesson and is still trying to drink with Jonah Hex.

Eh! The more tears for him the more comedy gold for me.

  6. This whole thing could have been from YA #4. That Cap/Thor page…brilliant.

  7. Should’ve included when Noh-Varr first made his entrance, it was amazing. With UXM, I really enjoyed the art when the setting was in Limbo, back on Earth… not so much.

  8. “Brothers. I have this thing, and now you will have it as well.”

This may have been panel of the month, maybe even the year for me. FF puts a massive smile on my face each week.

    Love my tong.

  9. what about the death scene in ultimate spidey. i teared up.

  10. That Fury Max quote sounds like it could have been lifted from Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

  11. Why am I not reading Young Avengers? When the first trade comes out I’m gonna buy it and then start reading it in issues.

My favorite panel was probably…..Well there was a lot to love in Manhattan Projects. Probably either:

    A) The Sundae
    B) Harry Daghlian posing for the mirror post accident.

  12. The montage panel from Young Avengers before the awesome panel was even better.
