The Best of the Week in Panels – 04.11.2012

“A panel?”
“That’s right. When I was your age, television was called panels. And this is a special panel. It was the panel my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today I’m gonna read it to you.”
“Has it got any sports in it?”
“Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…”
“Doesn’t sound too bad. I’ll try to stay awake.”
“Oh, well, thank you very much, very nice of you. Your vote of confidence is overwhelming.”

Comments

  1. I get why a half-spider half-woman would have boobs – I can deal with that… but why shoulders and no arms? That don’t make no sense.

    • Not sure trying to apply “sense” to most of what is put on display in Sage is going to help. Which is why that book is so fucking awesome. The snake/dragon train is about to have a Prince with a television for a head board it to interrogate prisoners about a missing guy with horns. Also, contemporaryily dressed disemboweled out children want to help the horn guys’ wife.

    • *ghost children

    • @GrandTurk:
Shoulders, and hence Shoulder Blades, allow ones’ torso to articulate speech patterns non verbally. When you see this image in motion on the screen, you’ll understand.
It’s also an easy way for the even partly mammalian brain to process multiple arms and hands.

Wait. You haven’t had that dream yet? …I’ve said too much.

    • I loved Saga #2 it pulled me in a lot more than the first issue did. I loved the Stalk and her impressive weapon collection under her skirt. My only question is what is that other weapon on the bottom right?

  2. Peter Panzerfaust also had a sweet panel of Peter and “hook” clashing swords. And that Saga panel worked even moreso because of the panel earlier with her dress covering her…uh…well, whatever the heck she’s got going on down there.

  3. While there are panels I’d add to this, there are certainly none I can take away. And after two appearnaces on this list, I think I may have to pick up Avenging Spider-Man.

    • Avenging Spider-Man is essentially a Spider-man team-up book. You may want to make sure it doesn’t tie-in with another series (as this issue continues into this month’s punisher and daredevil) and that the creative team (which appears to be continuously rotating) and team-up character (next month is She-hulk) are something you would enjoy. It seems like it would be better to just check up on it every month than add it to a pull list.

  4. I didn’t even know Ben Grimm could grow a beard, but I must say, I dig the look.

Also, I really like that panel from Batman & Robin. Makes me sad I had to drop the book.

  5. How about Secret #1’s FOUR page title card? Hickman has officially gone mad.

  6. I would have picked the second to last panel in the Fantastic Four- or any of the last four panels, for that matter. The entire last page of Batman and Robin was perfect as well. I’ve been looking at the last two pages of those two over and over since Wednesday.

  7. Awesome page for Avenging Spider-Man. I hope Magoo sticks and Spider-Man calls him that a lot.

  8. Patrick Gleason, ftw.

  9. They’re all awesome, especially Batman & Robin!

  10. Grimm with facial rock hair? Guess I’ll be in the minority (again) and say I hate it. Just doesn’t make any sense and Garney drew it very lazily.

I don’t know if I have a favorite panel or page….but I did like that two page, widescreen splash from Batman and Robin. Maybe that is my favorite in retrospect.

    • How’s this for sense… What if, because of Ben’s mouth and nose still venting moisture, and thereby creating very minute levels of dissolution and precipitation reactions, Ben grows a beard and mustache over thousands of years in much the same way stalactites are formed in caves. It would realistically be necessary for Ben’s skin to have a high carbonate mineral content, but that’s something that can relatively easily be tested for my powdering a bit of his skin and putting a drop of acid on it. Of course this would also mean that he’d have one hell of a stalactite forming a little farther South, but maybe the ladies like that sort of thing.

    • JonSamuelson, you win the No-Prize.

    • I’m not reading FF, but maybe it’s a fake beard? That could become a thing someday, right?

  11. THe panel of Alfred smiling, watching Bruce and Damian play fetch, was also quite good. Probably the only time Alfred has ever been able to sigh and feel something akin to “normal” since before the death of Bruce’s parents.

  12. Chechetto and Gleason FTW!!! I also loved the last page of GL#8! Fantastic!!!

  13. The Stalk! I loved that reveal in Saga #2, totally took my by surprise and it was great

  14. That FF panel made me buy the issue immediately online.

    • i’m thinking of buying batman and robin because of their panel.

    • Batman and Robin’s been one of my biggest surprises of the New 52. I’m a Batman fan in general, but picked it up on a whim back in September. Gleason’s art is great of course, but I’ve really been enjoying Tomasi’s work with Damian and Alfred. I don’t think he has a great handle on Bruce yet (or rather, I don’t care for the handle he does have) but it doesn’t put me off too much. A solid 4 star book for me every month.

  15. Princess Bride? Conor, you softie! Some great work here – glad to see Demon Knights get some love.

  16. 70’s style supervillain sex party. now that sounds like fun.
eerie spider lady left me uneasy and made the hairs on my neck stand like static electricity.
    bearded ben? like.
batman and robin = coca cola polar bear and cub

  17. It’s Ben from a thousand years in the future

  18. See my previous reply to TNC’s complaint about the same thing. But moreover, just let it go. I think if you’re going to let the fact that Ben Grimm grows rocky facial hair ruin a beautiful issue like this for you, there’s something negative to be said about your priorities.

  19. i hate hickman’s work.(am not fond of is a more accurate phrase)
but i still love rocky facial hair. and to be fair, ben often enough looks like he has eyebrows. especially if you’ve ever seen the erik larsen verson. like a scotty dog.
and who’s to say that he doesn’t have a method for removing it that is comparable to us shaving. maybe that’s why you don’t see it on other areas of his body.
    just a thought.

  20. Loved F4 #605.

Looking forward to reading Avenging Spider-Man #6 and SA #25 very soon.

  21. Great F’n panels and about 4 or 5 of them are from the handful of titles I’ve narrowed it down to. I picked up all those except Wolverine and FF (Hickman FF omnibus for me)…dont read Avenging Spidey but Omega Effect only a 3 parter w Mark Waid so I’m grabbing all 3 and DD is solid anyway. Awesome collection of panles, Ben Grimm with some wall climbing vertical boots makes me wanna read that and Stegmans art is gonna be great on that book (sad face for Scarlet Spider though), Jim Hammond the original Torch was an awesome character to bring into this story, just love the mix of new and old characters in this book, love what Remender and Hardaway are doing and that panel was one I thought would make it on the list when I read/seen it. Love Checchetto’s art on Spidey, the small eyes and the coloring on that issue are great. Loving Glory and Saga. Batman and Robin is one of my absolute favorite titles right now….1st issue of Demon Knights I didn’t pick up but want to because of that panel. Good stuff.

  22. can someone please tell me why the spider chick with no arms, appears to be holding a sword handle with no blade? is it like a light sabre of something? answers please
