The Best of the Week in Covers – 09.07.2011

There are kind of a lot this week.

Moon Knight #5 Cover by Alex Maleev

Church.

O.M.A.C. #1 Cover by Keith Giffen

Oh. Man. Astonishing. Cover.

One of my favorite logos in the relaunch, and a fine, fine showcase of the Kirby-inspired art to be had inside.

Thunderbolts #163 Cover by Pasqul Ferry

Another outstanding cover in September’s wave of reboo–WAIT JUST A DARN A MINUTE!

Action Comics #1 Cover by Rags Morales

“If they’re shooting at you, you know you’re doing something right.” (Name the source for a BotWiC no-prize).

Red Skull #4 Cover by David Aja

You tell ’em, Nietzsche.  I love the faux fold impressions.

Swamp Thing #1 Cover by Yanick Paquette

Much as I love Paquette’s take on Swampy, the real draw here is his meticulous detail in the surrounding flora and fauna, used here as a symmetrical motif breached by our horrific main character.

Wolverine: Debt of Death #1 Cover by David Aja

It’s just classy as all shit, ya know? It demands a Prisoner style Ron Grainer score. Maybe even Morricone.

Animal Man #1 Cover by Travel Foreman

This is the most unsettling cover ever to feature a giraffe.

Comments

  1. The quote for the Action Comics cover… I swear I heard that on an old episode of the West Wing, years ago!

  2. Man… David Aja is so good it almost doesn’t seem fair

  3. Damn! That Aja cover scratches an itch I didn’t even know I had!

    • Which one?

    • @Paul Wolverine: Super Spy Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Something akin to the action we saw in Aja and Lark’s all too brief moments in Secret Avengers, mixed with ’60s Steranko era Nick Fury. I would buy the HELL out of that book. And if this is that book? Someone please let me know so I can get it.

  4. That Action Comics cover has been my phone wallpaper for forever. Works great btw. The Wolverine cover is sick and could easily come off as a spoof of a movie poster, but instead just makes me really want to read it/see it on the big screen.

  5. That Swamp Thing cover almost falls into Art Nouveau, like a Mucha.

  6. Nice selection, Paul – as you say, it was a good week for covers.

As regards the Thunderbolts cover, I like that it’s a homage to #1. I’ve not opened the book yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing why Namor would opt for modest shorts after all this time. These things are important.

  7. I really like the Moon Knight cover…thats just an interesting illustration style you don’t see very often in comics.

i’ve been pretty underwhelmed by the non-design of all the new 52 covers. The artwork is usually nice, but the logos and non-design of the covers are so expected and standard….a missed opportunity on DC’s part to do something fresh and original.

  8. Agreed on all points except for the OMAC logo. I think you’re out of you’re mind if you like that mess.

    • Downright daffy. That’s me.

    • The OMAC one is the only one that has any sort of actual design to it, at least to me. Everything else was boooooooring and looked like five minute photoshop jobs, or was the same or close to the same as older logos. I could probably make the JLA/JLI logos in MS Paint.

    • i saw a version of the OMAC logo on another site that was part of an entire new 52 logo show and tell..anyways the version there was just line art. Looked kinda neat. Unfortunately someone decided to bedazzle it with gradients and offset strokes and crap thats not needed.

    • Count me with the cuckoos, that’s a marvellous masthead.

    • Well I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a “good” design. It works perfectly for the book. It’s big and weird and gaudy just like all the art in this book. I love it.

  9. That Moon Knight cover was almost enough to get me to buy the issue. Almost.

  10. Red Skull and Swamp Thing are the best of this group! Awesome!!!!

  11. I might not have bought either of them, but those Aja covers are really first rate . . .

  12. Now all I can think about is SNL’s video fro Giraffe’s after that Animal Man comment.

  13. wow, wish i could just see the pencils of the mooknight, redskull, and swamp thing. or all of them

  14. If you like the Aja Red Skull covers, check out his blog where he shows the original propaganda posters that influenced them.
