The Best of the Week in Covers – 05.22.2013

“You know, every day I get out of bed and drag myself to the next cup of Covers. I take a sip and the caffeine kicks in. I can focus my eyes again. My brain starts to order the day. I’m up, I’m alive. I’m ready to rock. But the time is coming when I wake up and decide that I’m not getting out of bed. Not for Covers, or food or sex. If it comes to me, fine. If it won’t, fine. No more expectations. The longer I live, the less I know. I should know more. I should know the Covers’re killing me. You’re suspicious of your suspicions? I’m jealous, Kay; I’m so jealous. You still have the heart to have doubts. Me? I’m going to lock up a 14 year old kid for what could be the rest of his natural life. I got to do this. This is my job. This is the deal. This is the law. This is my day. I have no doubts or suspicions about it. Heart has nothing to do with it anymore. It’s all in the caffeine.”

Daredevil_26

Daredevil #26

Cover by Chris Samnee

Somewhere, Will Eisner is smiling. All over, Daredevil fans are smiling

Superman_20_Full

Superman #20

Cover by Aaron Kuder

There’s a lot of junk muddling up this cover, but at it’s center, a bold shot heard ’round the world. We abuse the term visceral, but it seems apt here. Just a slobberknocker of a freeze frame.

Five Ghosts_3

Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabrian Grey #3

Cover by Chris Mooneyham

I hope this series serves as a golden ticket for Chris Mooneyham to do whatever he pleases in comics for the foreseeable future, from Doctor Strange to Batman to something we’ve not yet heard of. This cover takes us to another time and place, atmosphere to the nines.

The Unwritten_49_Full

The Unwritten #49

Cover by Yuko Shimizu

The spiral is grim and alluring, but it’s that look of defiance on their faces that truly chills.

Young Avengers_5

Young Avengers #5

Cover by Jamie McKelvie

Not only a playful use of color, but as strong a use of negative space as we’ve seen in a good while.

Wow, that superman cover is really something!

  2. Wow. I just realized that the clothes on the line actually spell out Daredevil. I’m slow.

  3. For me, nothing came close to the Five Ghosts cover this week.

  4. I can’t stand the ad’s on the covers (marvel and dc). It’s so tacky and takes so much away from awesome cover art. I could rant for pages about it but what ev’s.

    • Yeah those banner ads are horrendous.

    • Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

      Right there with you.

    • At least the banner for Man of Steel is less obtrusive than all the ones for Arrow.. Plus, it wasn’t even on Unwritten. So, you know, progress . . .

    • If prefer comics covers with ads, it feels like an added bonus!

Okay, nobody likes them – but I think the Man of Steel one looks classier than the Avengers Assemble ad, which looks like something you’d see on the side of a hockey rink.

To me it seems like they shouldn’t need to put ads for superhero tv series/movies on comic books. I mean, comic book fans are the first to know when that kind of stuf is coming (with or without ads on the front).

  5. Five Ghosts is in outstandingly beautiful book.

  6. That is a wonderful Superman cover by Kuder….

But how can anything top that outstanding Samnee cover? Might be one of (if not THE) best cover this year.

  7. Gotta say, Jamie McKelvie is really doing some stuff…his design ideas are amazing…like, Steranko-level amazing.
And, yeah, that Daredevil cover is beyond good. For some reason, I have a feeling it’ll be overlooked award-wise, but I think it’ll ultimately be one over the most remembered covers ever.

  8. Great covers, I bought all them except Unwritten which I plan to read more in trade, only have vol 1. Bought the Superman just for Orion cause I love the New Gods and Kirby, and don’t buy Supes monthly. I love that in your face color clash, SMASH!, and clobbering all together. It was a fun breezy issue and thought it was strange how much I liked the way Orion looked similar to Quietly or Pitarra’s style but the rest of the issue didn’t.
