PREVIEW: 27: Second Set plus Soule Does the Hits

In the first mini-series set, we learned that Will Garland, heralded guitarist, had reached the age of 27, where true rock stars rarely pass. All of a sudden he couldn’t play anymore. Then he made a deal with the ostensible devil, had a supernatural device implanted in his chest, and learned that he’s mixed up in some nasty stuff. Will can press the button on his chest and some amazing things happen. The first time, he could play again. Then it wore off. Turns out that when he presses the button for the 27th time, he’s dead. And here we are.

The first 4 issues from Image Comics were written by Charles Soule, with art by the incredible fun to say Renzo Podesta.

But that’s not all! This series is all about the world of pop music, and specifically this set deals with one-hit-wonders, and this is where the writer went the extra mile. Reading the series, it’s clear he’s got some musical jones about him. In that vein, he’s been recording and releasing one cover of a one hit wonder per day on his blog, performed only with his voice and an acoustic guitar. I defy you to not get ‘Take on Me’ stuck in your head. Or perhaps you could sample ‘Mickey’, ’18 and Life’, or even the abominable single, ‘Lovefool’.
