Peter Milligan Writes RED LANTERNS in 2011

Well, if your New Year's wish was for ANOTHER Green Lantern comic book then today is your day!

Over on their blog, DC Comics has announced that Peter Milligan will be writing Red Lanterns in 2011. Not a lot of information has been given about the book itself, other than it is supposed to be an on-going series, but they did release a statement from Milligan:

Everybody who has read Green Lantern and its associated books for any time probably knows why Atrocitus is angry. His entire race was almost wiped out by marauding Manhunters.

But after Geoff Johns asked if I was interested in writing The Red Lantern Corps I started thinking about Atrocitus and his anger. Because it’s not just anger. It is RAGE. A crimson red rage that still consumes him after all this time. And when you think about it, the Manhunter massacre happened an awful long time ago. Eons ago. Okay, you’d never get over something like that. But Atrocitus’ rage…it hasn’t weakened. It is just as immense and awesome as it was all those centuries ago. I wanted to know why. I wanted to know how.

In the first storyline of THE RED LANTERN CORPS we look for an answer to these questions. And the answer lies in part on the far side of the prison planet Ysmault. It is here where we’ll see why and how the rage of Atrocitus is just as all-consuming as it ever was. We’ll also begin to learn what goes on in the boiling brains of his napalm-blooded corps. Can the proud Bleeze remain a loyal servant? How does the angry cat DEXTAR try to feed its beloved master? And what horrors lie at the bed of the ocean of blood?

Hmmm. It appears from the statement that the original title of the book was The Red Lantern Corps but the blog calls the book Red Lanterns. Well, whatever it's called I'm sure there will be a lot of vomiting blood.

  1. Awesome, the fact that Dex-Starr may be a part of this sold me.  We’re one step closer to getting our Indigo Corps series, kids…

    Nokk…

  2. I don’t want this.  I’ve dropped all my singles (exept Flash) and gone to trades, and even then i think i might just get GL and GLC.  That’s all i need.  Personally of course.

  3. Well, nothing’s gonna top this in 2011.

  4. Is another GL book really necessary? I’m not criticising – I don’t read any – but is it really needed?

  5. Milligan has always been a hit or miss writer in my eyes. Though when he misses, the stories aren’t necessarily bad, just unmemorable.

However, he does have a good grasp on bizarre stories and concepts, so I will be looking forward to this. Besides, it has DEX-STARR!!!!!

  6. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

I think I’ve reached by Lantern saturation point. Glad the Dex-Starr fans get a new book though!

  7. This is certainly the exact opposite of what everyone thought would happen after Blackest Night.

  8. KITTEN!

  9. I like it.  Each lantern has an interesting mythos.  Removing the Red Lanterns from “Green Lantern” may enable a refocus on Hal’s world, where it belongs.

  10. I’m glad they went with red.

  11. @WonderAli  ANGRY kitten!

  12. I dropped all my lantern books a few issues into Brightest Day but I am very interested in this. I love Milligan and Atrocitious was my favorite supporting character in the whole buildup, event, and aftermath of Blackest Night. I’m in for a few issues and will be excited to see what Milligan has in store for us.

  13. Paul found the perfect word.  I’m absolutely at my saturation point.  I missed a couple of weeks at my comic shop over the Holidays, and when I went in to pick up my stuff 5 of the 10 books I bought were Green Lantern related.  I’m ready for the grand sweeping epic to just be done finally, and for GLC and GLC to tell their own self-contained storied in a shared universe.  Wouldn’t that be nice…

  14. My guess is that this book exists purely to coincide with the release of the movie, and DC couldn’t justify a fourth book focusing on the Green Lantern Corps. I doubt it’ll do much, and probably last just enough issues to get a sales spike from the movie and DVD releases.

  15. at NYCC i asked John’s if another corps would get their own book. His short answer, “yes”.

  16. I’ll give this a shot. I’m not anywhere close to my saturation point yet. I’ve been enjoying almost everything GL for years. And I just like Atrocitus so damn much. I think he warrants more exploration than most of the other corspmen. I was hoping for an indigo series. But Johns will undoubtedly delve into that in GL proper.

One thing I hope MIlligan can do is expand the ranks of the Red Lanterns a bit. With the exception of Sinestro Corps and Larfleeze, these new “corps” are pretty low in numbers. I know the road to Blackest Night thinned the ranks of every corps considerably, but for chrissakes there’re are only four Blue Lanterns, a handful of Zamarons, and three or four Reds. I’d like to see an actual army of Red Lanterns.

  17. To be honest, I’m more interested in this than I was when I heard Emerald Warrior announced (and I do like Guy). I think one general book for the Corps and one book on Hal is about the limit of what we need to cover Green Lanterns… but some of the others I think have a lot of room to be further explored. I’d prefer an anthology series where we could jump from Corps to Corps than just the Red Lanterns, but anthologies don’t seem to have a healthy shelf life at the moment, so I can see the hesitancy in going down that route.

That said I hope this means some of the other Red Lanterns will gain the ability to communicate something more than spitting bloody acid vomit at people, or it will be a very quiet book.

Atrocitius: “The Guardians will pay for their crimes. I will grind their bones into the very foundation of Ysmault. What say you Bleez?”
    Bleez:*blargh*
Atrocitius: “…I’ve got to get some new friends.”

  18. Meh, I think I’m reading just enough Lantern comics right now (3).  Not really intrigued by a Red Lantern ongoing and I’ve never read something from Milligan that’s really grabbed me.

  19. I’m a huge Lantern fan, but I’m probably out for this book.

Totally agree with @JdRavnos too. I’d love to see a return to the Corps anthology format that the older GLC was back in the Alan Moore days, but with the different Corps, instead of just other Lanterns. More room for original stories that way, I think.

  20. Red Lanterns are cool and all but I don’t think I’ve ever read anything from Milligan I read twice.  I’ll give it a try but I’m not gonna get scammed into buying it just to see the big picture like I did with Brightest Day.  I still haven’t read BD #s 15 & 16

  21. I love the Red Lanterns, and Atrocitus is one of my favorite new characters. The only problem with this is Milligan, who is more miss than hit as a writer, and so I’m concerened that this just won’t be well written. Unless of course Milligan brings the same level he’s been using over on Hellblazer which is amazingly good. If he could do that then this book might be worth checking out.

  22. Called it. Don’t get me wrong I love the Red Lanterns, but it has been apparant for a while that Johns can’t tell the whole story he wants to tell.

  23. This before a Sinestro Corp title is actually surprising. But I’ll be down. Definitely.

  24. i love red lanterns, and i’ll read about an angry cat any day.

  25. Is it weird that a blood vomiting kitten is the only selling point here.

In the long run, I am going to take a break from any GL books. The main title last month left a bad taste in my mouth and I just don’t care about any of these guardians anymore. So this doesn’t entice me any bit.

  26. I think a Blue Lantern book where they just hang out and wait for a Green Lantern to show up so they can do something would be funny.

  27. Meh. Despite all his rage, he is still just a cat on a page.

  28. Sad that they feel the only way to get a new book out is to make it a Lantern tie-in.  So all we get these days are X-Books, Avengers, Batman and Lanterns.  I’ll see how it is when the trade comes out.

  29. @Poopmonster  -they release all kinds of new books all the time…almost weekly.

    @kingdomofevan  –well played sir.

  30. SO…instead of a green army that is more or less just cannon fodder for the Big Bad to demonstrate how big and bad he is, we now can look forward to a RED army  to serve as cannon fodder- twice as angry and twice as personality-less.

  31. @kingdomofevan  Well done!

  32. Dex-Starr Secret Origins!

  33. I don’t think I spelled that right….Whatever I love KITTIES!!

  34. @kingdomofevan  Ahh… I see what you did there.

  35. Isnt Atrositus already in “Elemerald Warriors”?

I could get into this if it was a comedy book about a super angry dude just trying to get stuff done.
Not sure I can get behind a book that tries to play a blood puking cat and a huge red dude powered by the power of rage and are always angry as a serious thing.

    Well who knows?

  36. I am filled with happiness for this not rage.

  37. @incredibledave  no, they just reference the pact here and there, atrositus himself does not appear.
While I am incredibly excited to read this, i am also worried it will get boring quick.  But at the same time, i tend to find everything atrositus says to be hilarious in itself.
    …so there’s that

  38. I will definitely give this a shot. Did Dex-Starrever get revenge?
