Oh Say Can You See: The CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Theatrical Trailer

It's here.

Yeah, there's an ET logo on there, but that dude's voice over is gone, replaced by Tommy Lee Jones being his badass self. Plus, an introduction to Tony Stark's dad and a joke about antibiotics!

Yes, it does include a lot of footage we've already seen. Yes, the marketing on this one went sort of totally backwards from the way it probably should've gone. There probably would've been a lot more impact had they started with this trailer and not the 30 second TV spot. That said, there's still a lot to be excited about here. Street toughs. Trash can lids. A fitting introduction to the American hero who only needed a bit of a boost to become a legend.

Get ready to suspenders your disbelief!

I wouldn't want to be Hitler on July 22nd. Or, you know, any other day. But especially not then. I'd skip school that day. Summer school.

UPDATE: Went in and swapped the ET version out for Marvel's much nicer version. This guy approves:

Comments

  1. OH MY GOD! Awesome sauses!

  2. This looks soooo damn awesome. I cannot freaking wait.

Love the Tommy Lee Jones VO by the way

  3. Is it wrong to want to see Chris Evans punch Hitler in the face? I’m getting a little psyched for this movie.

  4. FUCK YES!!!!! Also Sam Jackson makes a great Nick Fury but I think Tommy Lee Jones would have also done a hell of a job. They better have Sammy L in this movie with the Howling commandos.

  5. If all the iFanboy community would excuse me, I need to go to the gym.

  6. AMERICA!!  FUCK YEAH!!!

  7. LOOKS AMAZING

  8. It looks like a lot of fun. This and the other superhero films make me happy for summer!

  9. Pre-Cap Chris Evans looks and sounds awkward; that’s a shame.  Otherwise, everything else looks fun.

  10. Wow!  A fantastic trailer.  I can’t wait for this movie!

  11. Woah.  I got chills watching this.

  12. A hell of a lot better than the 30 second teaser.

  13. Looks really really good

  14. this rocks my socks off!

  15. Continues to look promising.

But here’s hoping the scrawny Steve scenes are a min.

B/c from here- that special effect looks pretty bad.

Chris evans face on the cgi body looks like it’s going to slide off if her turns too quickly.

  16. I’m excited!

  17. Were the filmmakers intentionally riffing on the SNL Schmittz Gay beer commercial in that scene where the scientist peers over his sunglasses to look at Cap’s muscled bod?

  18. This one looks goooood.  I’m not typically into period movies, but this certainly hits all the right notes.  I will agree that the voice on pre-Cap Steve sounds too deep, I’m thinking the special effects to make him look so small are pretty seamless.

  19. F’IN AWESOME!!!!

  20. Im excited for this. I think the CGI skinny Steve is not finished yet, kinda like Green Lantern!

My only complaint, Why not release this on 4th of July? Everybody will be feeling patriotic!

  21. Wow. Far better than I was anticipating.

  22. Reading the comments I’d say this movie seems more anticipated than Thor.

  23. Ah-mazing.

  24. As great as this trailer is, don’t be fooled.
I think it’s done by the same trailer house that did the third JJ Abrams Star Trek trailer that had the best trailer score in the history of trailers.  It hit all the resonant and emotional notes one could ask for.  Luckily for us Star Trek was great without that score, hopefully the same will be for Cap.

  25. Awesome. Excited for both this, Thor, and X-Men.

Green Lantern, what have you done wrong?

  26. SLAM EVIL!

(Sorry, sorry, sorry, forgot this isn’t Cap’s catch phrase. Just got so excited.)

  27. @j206  #1 Casting …

  28. Exteriors look reeeeeeeaaaaly sound stage-ey.  And precap steve looks a bit off.  other than that, looks rather nice.

  29. I think preCap Steve is supposed to look awkward.  He’s a big head atop a runt body.  On the whole, this looks cool.  I even like the music, which works well at heightening the tension.

  30. @AmirCat – Yeah. But it’s something much more. GL hasn’t been able to generate any buzz whatsoever besides getting people to talk about how weird the costume looks.

I’m not saying it’s going to be a bad movie. But Warner Bros has done a terrible job in marketing and building up hype. Especially in comparison to Marvel with Cap and Thor. And even Fox with X-Men, who was able to overcome the initial bad buzz that came from the poorly photoshopped picture.

Either GL is a total turd, and WB is doing it’s best to keep it as under wraps as can be. Or they are simply doing a poor job promoting it.

  31. Oh. My. God.

I’ve waited nearly my entire life to see this movie.

I was skeptical early on.  The costume info, the plot leaks, the director’s very early comments.  But now, I have to say that the film looks incredible.

They need to move up the release to July 4th.

  32. Looks 1000x better than the 90s movie

  33. Wow that Hitler line was full of badassery! Can’t wait for this to come out!!!

  34. Have I mentioned how amazing it is that they just threw caution to the wind and made this a full on period film? So awesome.

  35. Scrawny Steve is going to take some getting used to, but I like where this is going so far.  The set pieces look fantastic and I can see Hugo Weaving peel his face many times (awkward?)

  36. Here’s 2 things I know. I saw a Dum Dum hat, and the girl who plays Peggy made me fall in love with her in Pillars of the Earth.

I really want this to be good.

  37. I am so much more into this than Green Lantern.  It’s like a fanboy dream after building for years with Iron Man and Hulk.

  38. Pre-Cap Steve is fine characterized as awkward, but the point is the FX are clumsy and his voice doesn’t fit.  Maybe his voice is fine, but I can’t think of an example, in my personal experience, where a person that runtish has ever had as deep a voice as what’s on display here.

  39. Now…NOW that looked cool.

  40. Blah.  Did not get me on board the way the 2nd trailer for Thor did.  Still looks on the level of Daredevil. Mediocre.

  41. AWESOME! Is it wrong that I have a boner after watching this? I mean that in the straightest way possible.

  42. 121 days, brothers and sisters. Damn near 120.

Misgivings about Laser Nazis notwithstanding, this has me excited in a way I wouldn’t have imagined possible a year ago. They’ve successfully convinced me that everyone is firing on all cylinders.

Bear in mind, when Iron Man was announced, a lot of you were thinking, “From the director of ‘Elf’…!”

  43. Good looking trailer and I’m getting more confident as they keep pumping them out.

Although I still find it weird that haven’t shown a scene with Red Skull talking. I’m sure the reveal of him taking the mask off is a payoff late in the film, but I still don’t know if they made it look good enough while he’s talking. The production still of Red Skull looks great, but is it gonna look to silly when he talks?

Other then that slight nitpick, I’m 100% geared up for this. More so then Thor if I’m honest.

  44. Looks great. I remember 5+ years ago when me and my co-workers were fantasizing about a Captain America movie set in WW2. I’m pretty surprised that that’s what we’re actually getting with this. If it’s as good as The Rocketeer, I’ll be happy.

    @RonSwanson  – Tater?

  45. very good. very exciting. great use of music too

  46. Fan-tastic.

Question: do we think that Hydra has REPLACED the Nazis in this, or that the Nazis are just a FRONT for Hydra in this movie’s mythology?  Kinda like the Nazis being sort of a front for the Chituari in Ultimates Vol. 1.

  47. @Race: It’s hard to tell with this trailer, although it might be the latter of what you said. Cause if HYRDA was just a branch of the organization I very much doubt Hitler would put that much men into it…..although to be fair he was an evil asshole.

I think HYRDA might be the big baddies while the Nazi’s are a front for the Allies to use. (Good job to point it out Race)

  48. @RaceMcCloud  From what I’ve read there are Nazis in the movie, HYDRA is just a very bad division of the Nazis, like the SS.

  49. Never been a big fan of Captain America, but now I’m excited. And skinny Chris Evans is freeeaky.

  50. I’m a bigger Cap fan than Thor, but so far i’m more excited for to see the odinson on the big screen. I’m just not digging the ultimate cap look of this AT ALL. i HATE ultimate Cap. *sigh*

In any case, i’ll be seeing them both and will probably need to change my pants after both engagements.

  51. @bestillcody Wow really? A deep voice has nothing to do with the size of your body. Compare Tay Zonday to Mike Tyson, which one sounds like a 6 year old girl?

  52. You reckon they could pull of a movie like this for Captain Kangaroo?

  53. @conor  Tommy Lee Jones says that he wants the recruits to “escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of Hell.”  So I guess the matter can be confirmed, or at least we can say that nazis are heavily implied.  Cannot mention Hitler without implying nazis.

  54. wikipedia & imdb both list hydra as a sort of super-weapons division of the nazi’s, which is headed by the red skull.

the reason why the movie seems more focused on hydra than the rest of the reich appears to be purely from a merchandising standpoint. we can’t have toys lining the shelves at wal-mart with swawstikas emblazoned on them, now can we?

  55. That trailer made it look better – although the suit still looks ridiculous. I know they were going for a ‘functional war gear’ type look but it just looks baggy, puffy and a bit like the kind of thing that a cos-player would go to comicon in. Hopefully they keep him out of it as much as possible…

  56. My goodness that film looks incredible. I am looking forward to this film the most out of any films this year. This and Thor. Bring on the Avengers!

  57. @bestillcody Isn’t that the idea?… Looks amazing!

  58. Hot damn, and… hot damn again!

  59. @pyynk  Me too!!

  60. @mattstev – quite you, grown-ups are talking…The suit, plot, trailer looks brilliant.  I can’t wait!

  61. Hells yes! Nothing helps a trailer like a little Tommy Lee Jones. I’m finding myself intrigued with the angle that the movie, and Evans in particular, seem to be taking with Roger’s character. It really seems like we’re going to see a story about a 90 pound weakling turning into He-Man overnight, and the fact that that would be difficult to adjust to. He doesn’t hop out of the pod as Super Confident Guy. I like that he’ll have to earn his stripes, if you’ll pardon the pun.

I can’t decide if I’m more excited for this or Thor, so I think I’ll just be super excited for both! And First Class! And Green Lantern… is also a movie!

  62. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure about this movie, but holy fuck does that look awesome!

  63. WOW. Basically awesome. I so can’t wait for this…

  64. Pretty great trailer. Anyone else hear “Mr Stark” when they started injecting Super Soldier Serum?

  65. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

You heard right. The guy in the shades is Tony’s dad.

  66. @SmokMnky  Yep, the guy with the mustache is Howard Stark.

  67. Had a uh ohh moment, when the actress starts shooting bullets in a small closed off area to test out the shield, no ricochet,Uh ohh!!

  68. I think it looks good.  I’m still skeptical.  Just think with these movies its better to keep expectations low.

My big question is WHY did they have Bucky and Cap be friends pre-super soldier.  That totally changes their dynamic!  Bucky is supposed to idolize Cap and Cap is supposed to be sort of father like, am I wrong?  If Bucky was Caps brother figure, it’s just weird when cap becomes an American Hero.  (Talking about :38 of the preview).

  69. Surprised that nobody has complained about Two Face showing up in the Marvel universe. 😉

  70. Great trailer. Cannot wait for this one.

  71. I like it that it’s Howard Stark in the film but it doesn’t look like any the actor used in Iron Man 2.

  72. @TheNextChampion  Don’t forget he is supposed to be like 20 years younger here.  But i agree he does feel off.

Did anyone know there is a Union Jack credit listed on IMDB?

  73. THis is shaping up to be a great year

  74. I mean, that looks awesome.  The three major Marvel movies (“Captain America,” “Thor,” and “X-Men: First Class”) all look pretty sweet.

  75. Was that Jimski beating on runt Steve in that alley?  😉

  76. @tschafer – ‘quite you’? ‘quiet you’ maybe? Also, i’m not sure that the definition of ‘grown-up’ is ‘someone who blindly thinks the Captain America trailer is good’.

Seriously though, the suit looks dreadful, the special effects look a bit wonky on thin Steve and it’s got a worrying ‘camp rocketeer’ type vibe to some of the production values, set pieces and feel of the film.

Here’s hoping it’s just the trailer and the actual film is better quality because as much as Captain America is a character that has absolutely no resonance with me he is the kind of well established character that deserves a good film.

  77. err… sorry about the blue text – don’t know where that came from!

  78. Oh Hell Yeah

  79. the 1990 one looked much better
