Next Marvel Movies? Dr. Strange? Cosmic?

In an interview over at IGN, Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige spoke up about the future of Marvel movies. We'll let you read it for yourself, but there's a lot loaded in this little paragraph. After the Avengers, there are plenty of plans in motion.

"Thor will go off into a new adventure, and Captain America will continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own. We hope that holds true for the characters appearing in that film — Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. —all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films. And, we've got a lot of other characters we're prepping and getting ready for film debuts: the world of martial arts, these great cosmic space fantasies, Dr. Strange, and the magic side of the Marvel Universe. There are many, many stories to be mined."

Wow. Let's go through that.

  • Thor and Captain America each get sequels.
  • Other characters might get sequels, including Black Widow, Hawkeye, and all of S.H.I.E.L.D..
  • There could be a Marvel martial arts movie. Shang Chi? Iron Fist?
  • Dr. Strange movie?!
  • A cosmic movie. We already saw the Infinity Gauntlet will make an appearance. Nova? Guardians of the Galaxy? Captain Marvel? Endless possibilities!

Are you happy yet? Of course, all this is likely contingent on the success of the upcoming movies. A couple of them can tank, sure, but if Cap, Thor, and Avengers all don't do well, that could wrap up this little joyride real quick. That seems unlikely though.

No, instead they'll be going to the well, deep into the well, and wringing it dry for all it's worth. The real question is how deep the general public's appetite is for these movies. Then there's the question of mounting these giant movies with a shared cast and universe and the logistical challenges I'm very glad I'm not in charge of solving.

Here's the thing. Dr. Strange can't carry his own comic book series, but a Dr. Strange movie? That could be about 48 kinds of wonderful.

Comments

  1. In a weird way, seeing a couple of these Avengers-related movies struggle could be the best thing that ever happened to the rest of this slate. “Yikes! Thor 2 and Cap 2 are dead on arrival. I need a Nova vs. Iron Fist script on my desk by Monday morning.”

Of course, if that did happen, Nova vs. Iron Fist would have a budget of $11.47.

  2. Eh, I’m not terribly excited to hear about all these movies being made. In general, I’ve found pretty much all the movies made so far (Iron Man, X-Men, Batman, etc) to be very dull affairs that never really captured the magic of their source material. The only exceptions imo have been the Dini/Timm cartoons.

  3. @Jimski  I’ll throwin the extra$0.53 to make it an even twelve.

I could see a few of those lesser known characters holding their own in a film if the studio doesn’t make them into overblown spectacles. Also, Matthew McConaughey should play Iron Fist.

  4. I am sure too that a number of these properites would work well in Marvel’s new television division. I’d love to see a high tec SHIELD show.

  5. I’d be down for a S.H.I.E.L.D flick with Hawkeye & Black Widow in it.

  6. I think Dr Strange and some of the other 2nd tier characters could work well in a movie, if they concentrate more on the essence of the character and less on the capes and cowls. Dr. Strange….a medical dr, turned occult mystic sorcerer. That could be sweet…give him an updated costume, but keep the Vincent Price aspect.

  7. The #1 thing I want to see in The Avengers:
I want to see a reference Hickman’s S.H.I.E.L.D. More specifically, when #$%& has really hit the fan. I want Nick Fury to say the words: “This is NOT how the world ends.”
Nothing more. Just fit that line in there!

  8. I imagine the chance of a cosmic movie hangs on how well Green Lantern is taken in by audiences this summer

  9. Blade also couldn’t hold his own comic and they made 3 movies. It might have had more to do with Wesley Snipes (at the time) than the character but people went to go see the sequels.

  10. just imagine a Ditko insipired Dr Strange movie, SO AWESOME! … I forsee an April 20th release date

  11. i don’t think flops will stop them from making these movies.
now that it’s Marvel Studios and not Marvel relying on some movie studio to do something with their properties. as long as bet everything on Darkhawk the Movie (sorry, Ron) for the summer of 2013 we’ll be watching comic book movies for years to come.

  12. @Smasher  –i think if something like the Avengers or Thor (more likely IMO) flops or underperforms the studios may shy away from full on capes and cowls superhero fare, BUT they most certainly will be mining the rich IP from the comic world for yrs to come.

  13. I predict Thor, Captain America and X-Men First Class will do well this summer, in that order.  Thor seems to have really good buzz and the promotion has been really good.  I predict Iron Man like numbers for Thor.  Captain America’s popularity cause that film to edge out X-men First Class, just barely.

The wild card for the summer is Green Lantern.  The latest Wondercon footage may have saved this film from oblivion.  I think they have done enough to get butts in seats on opening weekend.  It’s ultimate success will depend on the quality of the 2nd and 3rd acts.

  14. that ‘gauntlet’ looks horrible. it also makes no sense that it would be in asgard.

  15. I would think a Thor and Cap sequel would be pretty much in the bag at this point. They aren’t out yet but the buzz around them are so big I can’t imagine they’re going to tank financially.

I’m excited for a SHIELD and/or Nick Fury movie which they’ve been hinted at for a while now. (Other then this comment recently) By the time it’s made though Sam Jackson is going to be well close to 70. But he’ll still kick asses like nobody’s business.

  16. There are rumours of a Dr.Strange TV series but I would love to watch a Dr.Strange movie. Get Del Toro on that and it would be AMAZING.

  17. I would love a Dr. Strange film, especially if it focused on his origin and early years.  A SHIELD film would depend on what they were going to deal with and not just have it some spy/action film that could be about any agency.  Depending on what happens with their characters in the AVENGERS film, a Hawkeye/Black Widow film would be a natural.

I don’t think anyone is surprised that there are plans for sequels to both CAPTAIN AMERICA & THOR.  Marvel loves their franchises.

  18. I wonder if a Dr. Strange movie would try to play into the Harry Potter market? I would love any sort of Dr. Strange attempt.

  19. i want a dr. strange film(real bad). but keep it dark and make the special fx amazing.

  20. Doc Strange or cosmic would be most welcome

  21. Even Black Widow is no more of a hard-sell than Aeon Flux or Salt, assuming they could get Johannsen to reprise her role. Not necessarily going to be a hit, but it could get made. And Iron Fist based loosely on Fraction/Brubaker’s run? That could totally work.

  22. @TheNextChampion  Considering Nick Fury himself is close to 100 years old, I think Sam Jackson is fine to play him at 70.

I think an iron Fist movie could be pretty bad ass.

dr. Strange would either be AMAZING or AWFUL. I don’t really see an average movie coming out of that.

I think the obvious choice for a cosmic based movie would be Silver Surfer. He’s a character that really connects with people. Plus, he just looks incredible, visually.

Now that Marvel is owned by Disney, how long before we see a Power Pack movie?

  23. I would want a Dr. Strange movie as a Mashup of Harry Potter and House M.D.
