‘Marvel’s The Avengers 2’ Gets a Release Date; ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Gets a Plot Description

Assuming nothing changes in the next two years and nine months, Marvel’s The Avengers 2 has a release date: May 1, 2015. Hopefully Joss Whedon can get to writing soon so that we can get a full title and we can loose that lousy “2” from the title. For now, the press release just calls it Untitled Marvelโ€™s Avengers Sequel, which is how I think we’ll refer to it from now on.

Also, we now have some idea as to what Guardians of the Galaxy will be about. Floating around the usual Hollywood websites is the films purported logline:

About a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

Who’s the ex-con? What’s the conflict? What do they have? Speculate below!

Comments

  1. U.S pilot is Star-Lord, I’m assuming, and the ex-cons could be Gamora, Drax, and Groot (Rocket Raccoon was a prison guard, right?), and their MacGuffin could be the infinity guantlet or a gem or something.

    • US Pilot is Christoper Summers!!!

That would be awesome, the Starjammers were always so cool

    • If that is true, then kudos to Marvel for being sneaky bastards (although I assume the Starjammers are part of X-Men canon and therefore owned by Fox).

    • If they go off of the Star Lord Mini-series from Annihilation Conquest Star-Lord is gven the rest of the team as a Dirty Dozen style squad where they are all imprisoned for criems against the Kree and the Kree figure their mission is a suicide mission. Also Rocket wasn’t a Prison guard he was more of the cartaker of an Asylum if you look at the Old RR mini.

    • Dirty Dozen in space? I’d watch that.

  2. Anybody else think Infinity Gauntlet? Or maybe even just an Infinity gem? the US pilot is Star Lord right? or is it Vance Astro?

  3. “About a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

    This is Farscape.

  4. Is that a GotG or Farscape film plot summary?

  5. My guess was for the pilot was Star-Lord, but James Tynion IV (writer of Batman back-ups, co-writing Talon for DC) just tweeted something I hadn’t thought of, but would be awesome:

“Folks seem to think that Vance Astro is the Air Force pilot in the Guardians of the Galaxy logline, but I’m going to bet it’s Carol Danvers.”

    • now I’ll be disappointed if it’s anyone else. That’d be really cool

    • i like where you are going with that. Adding another strong female lead to the franchise…sounds like a great idea.

    • Would having Danvers lead to the new take on Captain Marvel?

    • Now I’m going to be the worlds most disappointed person if it isn’t Danvers. Perhaps have Starlord be an Earthling who was imprisoned by the Kree years ago. And then have exactly ZERO sexual tension between the two of them.

    • Who’d you cast as Danvers?

    • Oh, man fan casting always seems so futile, but it is fun, isn’t it?

10 years ago I’d say Anna Gunn (Skyler on Breaking Bad), she’s very attractive but also has a toughness that I think would fit for Air Force Colonel Carol Danvers. But Gunn is 44 years old.

Katee Sackhoff is maybe too obvious since Battlestar Galactica, but she’d probably do well also.

I haven’t seen any of her movies yet, but Elizabeth Olsen has become something of an “it” girl among film critics (especially in comparison to her more-famous sisters). So we’d have a young, good-looking and talented actress who has some acting cred but isn’t really a big name yet.

I’m sure the pilot will end up being Peter Quill, but I thought James Tynion had a fun idea! We’ll see!

    • Man, that is some awesome Speculating, to tie Carol Danvers into the Avengers movies. I would like to see that. Unfortunately, the concept art made it seem like Starlord was the human lead of the movie.

    • Yeah, I couldn’t resist the fan casting ๐Ÿ™‚

Elizabeth Olsen is an interesting choice. She’s on the rise as they say (don’t ask me who ‘they’ are though or why they say that). By 2014 she might be an A-list’er.

If not for Prometheus I’d say Charlize Theron. But maybe by 2014 we’ll forget that movie happened.

    • I like the Katee Sackhoff idea… but sorry I HATE the Anna Gunn idea. To each their own, but she was never that hot, even back in her Seinfeld appearance.

However, when you consider they got Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow and Natalie Portman playing supporting role in Thor… their probably going to cast a more well known. Consider Jessica Biel keeps auditioning for comic book movies left and right, I think realistically you’re going to see someone of the likes of Biel, or Ali Larter or Jessica Able or such, as Carol Danvers.

In no way am I saying those are good suggestions… far from it. I’m just pointing out what’s more realistic in regards to the way they’ve cast the Marvel movies.

    • Of course I meant ‘Alba’ above. Its hard to type with tentacles for hands.

  6. Star-Lord is the pilot, the ex-cons are Gamora, Drax, and Groot. Most likely Rocket Racoon is a guard tracking them down and he enlists Star-Lord somehow (that’s why they’re both wearing the same uniform in the concept art).

I think they’re going for the Infinity Gauntlet, so maybe they each have (or at least have one out of the five of them) an infinity gem. Only problem with that is when we saw the gauntlet in Odin’s trophy room it had all of the gems already on it. So either they somehow snuck in Asgard and stole some of the gems, or this film is a somewhat prequel to everything we’ve seen so far. Maybe Star-Lord and the Guardians will pop up in Avengers 2 and he’ll be more experienced than now if they go that direction.

But, I highly doubt that. This is just speculation.

    • The gauntlet wasn’t in Thor, it was shown at SDCC, I believe. So, canonically it doesn’t necessarily have all the gems in it currently. I can see the lead-up films each involving a different Gem, in varying degrees of importance. The Mandarins ten rings combining into one gem, the soul gem being used to either keep Bucky brainwashed as the Winter Soldier or being used to free him from Russian control, it would also be quiet easy to work it in as the power source for the enemies in Thor 2.

    • Ah, but it was in Thor. Right when the ice giants try to steal the casket in the beginning. It’s only in a super quick shot:

    • That’s a bad pic, but it has all the gems in it. But since it was so quick, they might ignore it and make it a semi-continuity error. Some speculated Loki’s stick thing had the soul gem in it.

    • Yeah, I’d rather they just ignore that it was in Thor for a few fractions of a second.

Maybe it’ll be an opportunity for the first Marvel Studios No-Prize?

    • considering it controls space, time and everything, it has to be the easiest continuity “prop” to deal with in the history of movies. =)

    • But if it was never there, then how was it retrieved and end up where it was now if it was never able to be taken from the original place. Then how could the original owner change reality with it if he never got it since it was never there.

My mind just broke. This shit is like Inception!

  7. 2015. Thats a long time. I guess the Avengers need to defeat the Mayans first. =)

  8. I think the only thing clear is that the US guy is Starlord. It would be cool if the racoon was an ex-con. ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Sounds like they are borrowing from the Conquest storyline. In Annihilation Conquest, Starlord is ordered to lead a group of prisoners in a suicide mission against the phalanx. The prisoners were: Groot, Bug, Rocket Raccoon, Mantis, Death Cry, and Captain Universe. The survivors of this group would later go on to form the new Guardians of the Galaxy.

They are probably going to tweak Peter Quill’s story to make it more accessible to audiences and make him the pilot.

I’m guessing they have an infinity gem everyone is after.

It would be really cool if Cosmo also gets lost in space. The movie has to have Cosmo!

  10. This whole thread makes me want to go watch The Ice Pirates.

  11. U.S. Pilot will be Hal Jordon! What? Ok fine, it’s probably Steve Trevor.

  12. My name is Carol Danvers
    An astronaut
A radiation wave hit and I got shot through a wormhole
Now I’m lost in some distant part of the Universe, on a ship
A living ship, full of strange alien life forms
    Help me
    Listen please
Is there anybody out there who can here me?
I’m being hunted by an insane, purple tyrant
    Doing everything I can
I’m just looking for a way home

    God I miss Farscape…

  13. In his “original” origin, Peter Quill is a US astronaut who is granted special equipment by aliens that make him the Starlord (power suit, gun, and sentient space ship). So that would fit nicely with limited tag line provided.

  14. Star-Lord’s origins, as described by his creator:

“I deliberately made him a complete asshole,” Englehart says, “with the idea that I was going to write twelve stories about him as he worked his way through the galaxy, and by the end of it he would have become this great hero.” But Englehart, citing editorial interference, quit Marvel Comics soon after the first issue was published. X-Men writer Chris Claremont experimented with a less prickly version of the character before abandoning it completely in 1981, and 23 years passed before he was revived again. However, the character’s very name still carries the seeds of Englehart’s sharp humor. “Peter Quill โ€” Peter as a reference to a dick, and Quill as a reference to a dick,” he explains. “I wanted him to be completely unlikable.”

  15. I’d love to see Nathan Fillion as Star-Lord. Or Hal Jordan. Or both. Or bring back Firefly. Whatever comes first ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Yeah I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Nathon Fillion finally got casted as a character fans want him for and Star-Lord could be it…then we got Drax,Gamora (both with strong ties to Thanos, they all do but them even more so) them Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Would love to see Nova, Phyla-Vell and Adam Warlock in the mix as well then find a way to fit Carol Danvers in being a pilot as well. Ronan the Accuser on screen with his big ass hammer would be cool surrounded by green Kree soldiers. Gladiator…hell from Infinity Gauntlet, Annihilation Conquest, War of Kings through Thanos Imperative and all the Captain Marvel history they got a lot of good material to work with and possibly start a cosmic Marvel epic or Marvel space saga.

    • I’m guessing we’ll get Adam Warlock hinted at in Guardians and then in Avengers 2 he’ll serve as the Deus Ex Machina that helps them beat Thanos… and then in the after the Credit scene the Magus is unleashed >:)
