I can see the lead-up films each involving a different Gem, in varying degrees of importance. The Mandarins ten rings combining into one gem, the soul gem being used to either keep Bucky brainwashed as the Winter Soldier or being used to free him from Russian control, it would also be quiet easy to work it in as the power source for the enemies in Thor 2.
