Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Announced!

Today the prayers of fighting game enthusiasts and comic book aficionados, echoing for nearly a decade, were finally answered as Capcom has announced Marvel vs. Capcom 3! And, by god, there’s a teaser trailer!

It looks like we’ve got six confirmed characters, three from each side:

Capcom: Ryu, Morrigan, Chris Redfield
Marvel: Wolverine, Iron Man, Hulk

There are also ten characters in silhouette behind the company logos. For your speculatory pleasure, I’ve taken screencaps for easy reference. I’d almost swear the character on the far left of the Marvel screen is Deadpool. Click the thumbnails for a larger image.

No release date or gaming platforms were given in the trailer, but judging from the MT FRAMEWORK logo at the end I would suspect PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of MvC3 are on the way.The MT FRAMEWORK engine is Capcom’s cross-platform development system, used to create games like Resident Evil 5, Lost Planet, and Devil May Cry 4.  Judging from the tiny bit of gameplay shown at the end, it appears the graphics are a middle ground between Street Fighter IV and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

The Marvel Vs. series has always been known for having a large and diverse roster of fighters,  and knowing how much Capcom likes to tease their audiences, I expect a very slow reveal of characters over the next few months. I’m really excited to see who will be in it, as it’s been ten years since the last entry in the series and a lot has changed in Marvel comics since then.

Who do you want to see added to Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

UPDATE: Gaming blog Kotaku has posted their coverage of the MvC3 announcment, including some new artwork and interviews with Capcom staff. They've also taken a pretty good stab at the identities of the mystery characters, too: Captain America, Super Skrull, Chun-Li, Deadpool, Felicia, Dante, Frank West, Mephisto, Black Widow and Doctor Doom. Looks like this PS3 and Xbox 360 title will be out sometime in 2011.

Super Skrull?! Wow, this might be my most anticipated game of 2011 now.

Comments

  1. I saw the speculation about this a few days ago and have been comatose since. Great news, and it means my wife will continue to kick my ass in this game like she has in the previous one.

Oh, and I want Mickey with a Keyblade in it. That would rock.

  2. If they put either Luke Cage, Daredevil or The Punisher I would be pleased as punch.

on the capcom siade i’ll take Elena or Makoto from Street fighter 3

  3. man i wish i was better at these games. i would be more excited. 🙁

  4. YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! I WANT!

@jimski: Sorry. It looks like you’ll have to endure some more silhouette reveals.

  5. Ho-lee crap. Awesome. I spent many hundreds of hours playing the last one. I just recently sold all my old Dreamcast stuff and my copy of Marvel cs Capcom 2 netted more cash than almost everything else combined.

Hoping they get better music this time. MvC2 had one of the worst soundtracks ever.

  6. @flakbait-Shut your mouth. MvC2 soundtrack = heavenly.

  7. @flakbait I don’t know how I managed to get through writing this post without at least one "take you for a ride" joke.

  8. The quote "I knew that groove was in your heart!" from Capcom vs. SNK gets yelled out at random times by our group of friends. It’s our version of "Mayhem!"

  9. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FINALLY! i’VE BEEN WAITING OVER A DECADE FOR THIS! This has so much potential. I think I’m having a Nerdgasm!!!!!!!!!!!! SHRYOOOOOOOUKIN!~

  10. Very excited to eventually buy this and only play as the Marvel character (oh and Ryu and Ken of course)

  11. =| I’m oldschool so this 3D kick Capcom is on might turn me into a purist of the 2D animation. It’s like if you suddenly had the next marvel event drawn in that horrible style used in the Dark Avengers. (eg: SIEGE: NOW IN 3D!!!!)

  12. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome news! I recently dl’ed MvC2 on my PS3 and the game still holds up. Can’t wait for all the character teasers that are sure to come.

Let’s just hope "I’m gonna take you for a ride" isn’t the menu song this time. 😉

  13. Damn, I had my clever little "gonna take you for a ride" joke all chambered, but it turns out it’s passe. Oh well. My unbridled joy at the return of this franchise will have to suffice.

    ENGAGE!

  14. @joshrichardson hahaha!  I kept the music to the game on mute specifically because of "Take you on a ride!"  I hadn’t thought about it in years, but as i read your post that ladies’ voice jumped into my brain.  Such a great game with such a bad soundtrack.

  15. Yes. YES. Really looking forward to this now. Even if I suck at fighting games. Might even have to save up and buy an arcade stick…

  16. @CaseyJustice: XD!!! "ENN-ENN-GAGE!" That’s how my dreamcast sounds now because it’s lagging due to age.

@DMaggot: OHSHIT. You reminded me my old one broke and I hadn’t replaced it yet. = I’mma have to get a durable one this time around.

  17. Kotaku article says roster will be around 30 characters. That’s it? That would be very disappointing seeing as how the old game had nearly 60. I really hope there isn’t only 15 Marvel characters in the game. Seeing as how I mainly played with the Marvel characters and a couple Street Figther ones, that would take a lot of the fun away. Do it right Capcom!

  18. @j206-That article states there will likely be more than 30 characters, not that there will only be 30. Plus, it’s still speculation at this point.

  19. @j206: I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you sir. ESPECIALLY since Capcom has extremely obscure characters that are only half as exposed into the mainstream as those from Marvel. It should be a 7:3 Marvel/Capcom ratio.

Also, I really hope they upped the power of some of the Capcom characters as Chris Redfield’s gun couldn’t possible penetrate the Hulk. (but I dunno, maybe he’s got The Hood’s Guns).

  20. AWESOME!!

  21. I am so okay with all of their guesses for the shadowed characters being right. Super-Skrull would be awesome to play as. Dante, Mephisto and Black Widow would be a blast, just as long as Mephisto isn’t as easy to exploit as Blakcheart is.

  22. Mangaman: "It should be a 7:3 Marvel/Capcom ratio"

Totally agree. After the Street Fighter characters and a couple others, the Capcom characters get really weird. Like all the little girls and weird robots. I’d really just love to see a Marvel version of this with some Street Fighter thrown in. Or in a perfect world, Marvel vs DC. (drools)

  23. I’m down with the 7:3 Marvel/Capcom ratio as long as Megaman makes it in.

  24. Someone please tell me I’m not the only one who heard "Donkey punch!" every time the Sentinel pulled his "Rocket Punch" move.

    *crickets*

  25. So excited for this.  Even if they cut down the character list, maybe they can remove some of the chaff like Shouma-Gorath and BlackHeart.  Have Mephisto or Dormammu and Dr. Strange and you have your mystical characters covered.

I’m really hoping for Daredevil or Iron Fist in this one.  I will main one of them, no matter what tier they’re on.

  26. This game with Street Fighter 4’s graphic engine = me losing my life to this game.  Great news.

  27. "The goal is to create about 30 characters — 15 per side — for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game. That said, Nitsuma mentioned he wouldn’t rule out DLC either, but it wasn’t a priority at this time. The goal of the team responsible for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, says Killian, was to keep the same depth as its predecessors but also open doors to as many players as possible. "We’re returning to roots here, with core mechanics that made this series fun, but at the same time we want to make it more accessible and reduce some of its complexity."

Maybe it will end up a bigger roster. But only 15 Marvel charactes greatly limits my level of excitement

  28. I suck at fighting games and I’m still excited!

  29. Holyshit this is the best 4/20 ever!

  30. Honestly? that was totally unimpressive. I really don’t care about bright flashing lights. The awesome design of the 2-D original was replaced with shitty 3-D…. shit. Doesn’t look worthwhile

  31. @edward That wasn’t gameplay.  That was just a CG video trailer.  Most trailers blow and don’t really reflect the gameplay and the final product.  Hopefully they’ll lean more towards the graphical style of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and not Street Fighter IV.

  32. What incredible news! I’m a fighting game junkie, as I can play the Street Fighter games and the SNK ones for hours a day, and even longer when my friends come over to play. Very happy to see the Darkstalkers get represented, and it will be doubley cool to play as Deadpool in this game after years of seeing him in Mugen hack games.

I’m curious if this game will move at the manic pace of the previous Marvel vs. Capcom game, or if the 3D graphics mean we will get something akin to Street Fighter 4. Either way, it’s a no-lose situation, as both are examples of great fighting games. Can’t wait for this!

  33. HAHAHA!!!!

This has made my day! No month! No year!!!

My favorite game series of all time is coming back with a vengance! Marvel vs Capcom 2 is not only one of the best fighters in gaming, it’s one of the best period. So addicting and so fun to play. I bought the XBL version almost immediately it launched. Before that I spent hundreds of quarters on the arcade machine in the mall.

The line up looks so good too. I hope we get more of the classic fighters then just all newbies. Frank West, Deadpool, Chris Redfield, and Super Skrull might be nice additions….But I want me some Mega Man and Servbot action!

  34. Aw rats! I didn’t much like SF4; this game should be in 2D!!

  35. Guy on far left for Marvel is Cap.

    Looks good

  36. BUCKY CAP! with a gun!

  37. I’m hoping they revamp Megaman to his more mature Zero or Megaman 64 uniform. It would be better fitting for the melding of characters and less MUGENish like it has been over the years.
