Marvel NOW! Cullen Bunn & Will Sliney Team for THE FEARLESS DEFENDERS

While Matt Fraction’s Defenders series wraps this month, a new team is poised to assume that storied mantle in the new year. Marvel announced today that Cullen Bunn (Venom, The Sixth Gun) will team with artist Will Sliney (MacGyver) to chronicle the exploits of an all-female team known as The Fearless Defenders, set for launch in February

The new ongoing starring Valkyrie and Misty Knight is something of a spiritual successor to Bunn’s work on various Fear Itself tie-ins and followups, including, of course, Fear Itself: The Fearless. In an interview with Newsarama, Bunn is tight-lipped about the rest of the ensemble, but we do know that the villain is an all-new female character and that one other teammate is New Mutant Dani Moonstar. As for the premise for this team-up, the Fearless Defenders are essentially Valkyrie’s new Valkyrior group. We liken this to DC Comics’ Birds of Prey title, more than a bit lamentable since it says so much about the rarity, even the novelty, of an all-female superhero team.

What female heroes or villains would you like to see showcased in The Fearless Defenders?

Comments

  1. The team should be: Valkyrie, Misty Night, Hellcat, Dani Moonstar, She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters, the real one), Moondragon and Squirrel Girl.

  2. Meh…….
Not something I’d probably read or pull at all but for female villians I’d like to see more of in comics it’s Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers for my money.

  3. Yes! Valkyrie! That’s a book for me!

  4. Nice, love Valkyrie and Dani Moonstar, definitely would like to see She-Hulk and Hellcat as well

  5. Clearly, the arch-nemesis of this team should be The Mandril.

  6. She-Hulk, Tigress, Storm, Mrs. Fantastic Sue Storm

    • After reading this comment, I propose that from now on, all members of the Fantastic Four have their super hero names changed to Fantastic. The team will now be Mr. Fantastic, Mrs. Fantastic, Fantastic, Jr. and Uncle Fantastic.

  7. Please no rapey back-stories so I can actually read this with my 9 yo daughter!

  8. I am very excited to check this out. Bunn is a great writer and an all female team sounds like a blast

  9. I feel the same way about Bunn as a I did about Kirkman when he was doing work-for-hire: I love some of their creator owned projects, but the work-for-hire doesn’t do much for me. I kind of feel bad because I love The Sixth Gun, but havent really enjoyed any of his Marvel work so far.

  10. Please Squirrel Girl!

  11. Did Sliney do the cover?

  12. I love the cover art and this is a great idea for a female team. Since this is similar to DC’s Birds of Prey, my choice would be Misty Knight, Collen Wing, Songbird from the Thunderbolts, Black Cat, Firestar and whatever name Monica Rambeau is going by these days. XD

  13. Sounds cool!

  14. I liked the Fearless series so I’ll probably give this a go. I also like Valkyrie, and with Bunn writing Venom I hope this signals good things for those two. I like them together so maybe we’ll get a little cross over action.

  15. Bunn’s “The Sixth Gun” is one of my favorite books.

  16. This is a truly intriguing concept. I’m not loving Bunn on Venom so far, but his work on the Captain American team up book is terrific. There are soooo many cool female characters who could join this team. Jocasta and Tigra from the sadly defunct “Avengers Academy,” for instance. Hellcat, Black Cat, Moondragon, Mantis, Wasp and any number of X-Woman are all possibilities.

  17. Yeah, no thanks.

  18. Seems like the same ol’ concept Marvel tries to revive over and over. Trouble with this concept is that the characters tend to be too stereotyped, not much plot depth and it turns out to be just another cheesecake series.

  19. I look forward to seeing Dani Moonstar again. Always liked her, back in the old school New Mutants days.

I’d really like to see Shulkie appear in a book again soon. But I’m one of those diehards who thnks she ought to have her own title.

  20. So Marvel Now! is really giving love to the lady Asgardians. Valkyrie in her own book (kinda) and she’ll be a costar in Venom, and then there’s Lady Sif in Journey Into Mystery. Isn’t Enchantress gonna get a push in another book?

  21. Bunn can write strong female characters. Becky Montcrief, the lead of The Sixth Gun, is a great character. Mrs Hume, witch wife of the undead foe, is pretty awesome too. I enjoyed his rendition of the Valkyrie on The Fearless. There’s potential here.
