Tonight’s episode – The Variable
It’s the 100th episode of Lost and – what will all the guns being pointed and the yelling in the trailer – it looks like everything comes to a head tonight.
Personally, I’m hoping for a lot more Daniel Farraday in this episode. I can’t get enough of that guy. Not only has he heaped another level of tragedy and heart break onto a show already piled high with it, but he has a really entertaining bit of mad genius quirkiness that really sets him apart from the other characters.
The action gets underway tonight whenever the proceedings in Washington end. I’m already anticipating a big mess on my DVR when I get home tonight.

and the lines are drawn again. I love how this show continues to regroup and disband these little ‘teams’ if you will. Gives so many ways to have characters interact and through that develope them all. Such great writing.

Could Wednesdays get any better? New Comic book day, Lost and it’s hump day!
So, if really Daniel’s mum sent him back to the island to die… why did she do that?
Why did she shoot him? She had no idea it was him. That happened before the flashback with young Daniel at the piano.
Why did she push him along the path to go to the island? She believed it was his destiny and knew she couldn’t change it.
The message she wrote in the front of the journal she gave him is very telling.
That is really disturbing to me. That Eloise pushed and pushed and pushed Daniel so much…..just so he can travel back in time to 1977 and get shot….by her!! I guess the point is that while Daniel felt you could, somehow, change aspects of the past/future; Eloise feels you need to keep the same path without second guessing.
Very good episode, I am very pissed Daniel is most likely dead. It doesnt help the preview for next week shows Jack with a bloody face….probably trying to revive Dan. But things are getting heavy; and what would Lost be without an epic/action packed finale?
I’m sure we’ll see more Faraday, even if in flashbacks. His memory wipe problem and the accident at Oxford seem like something that we’ll eventually see played out. Possibly not until next season.
Obviously Eloise didn’t want to send her son back to be shot by her. You have to wonder what is so important that she felt she had to do it.
I really want a Richard-centric episode.
Damn this was a great episode. No gripes. Thoughts though:
If they don’t go back to the future(lol) soon, I guess that A) one of the main survivors will leave the numbers on the broadcast that brings Russo’s boat in and/or B) Adam and Eve in the cave will be 2 of our survivors.
OK…so some questions. Help me here anyone. The button that Desmond, and then later Locke, had to keep pushing is a button designed to release some of the energy that builds up? So when Desmond fails to push it, the energy causes the plane crash. OK, so far so good. When Locke fails to push it, Desmond pushes a fail safe button. Do you think the fail safe button casues the hydrogen bomb that was buried to negate the energy? I’ve never understood what exactly happen in that episode many moons ago with the fail safe switch…
And I really don’t think Ben believed in the button either. He was an Other before the hatch was created and only went back to Dharmaville after the purge. The incident casued the creation of the hatch and Ben wasn’t involved. What did he gain by having Locke not push the button?

Sorry about that! My wife gave up on the show a long time ago so I am sorely lacking on good, intelligent conversation regarding LOST.
It is neat to go back and rewatch this episode after you know that Daniel is going to be shot. You really see the sadness on Eloise’s face when she talks to him for the last time. She also pointed out in her conversation with Penny that "for the first time she didn’t know what was going to happen…" Do you think that perhaps she sent him back hoping that maybe he could change the past becasue of his gifts and that maybe he would not be shot afterall…
More stuff to give you a headache over….
I don’t think that it is Daniel’s death that is so important more so the events that happen as a result of his death.
Would Eloise be so adamant in getting Daniel to the right place an time just to be killed for no reason? I expect the events over the next couple weeks will be due to Daniel’s death and these are what are important to Widmore and Eloise.
@target242 good theory about the fail safe switch detonating the hydrogen bomb. Daniel said the bomb would negate the energy under the island and the fail safe stopped the overload so I reckon you’re right.
