Light Week? Try INVINCIBLE #100, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #16, & MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: THE ORIGIN OF HE-MAN!

As Charles Foster Kane who owns eighty-two thousand, six hundred and thirty-four shares of public transit – you see, I do have a general idea of my holdings – I sympathize with you. Charles Foster Kane is a scoundrel. His comics should be run out of town. A committee should be formed to boycott him. You may, if you can form such a committee, put me down for a contribution of one thousand dollars.

Invincible #100

By Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley

Invincible was the original iFanboy go-to book recommendation. This was before almost anyone knew who Kirkman was, and before anyone thought it would make it to 100 issues. But the coolest thing is, the book is basically as good as it ever was. Ryan Ottley was the perfect artist, consistently delivering exactly what you want from his pages, and pushing that with every issue. Someone’s going to get whacked in this one, I guess, and that makes it special. But regardless, I’ll be here for 101, 102, 103, and on and on.

Batman: The Dark Knight #16

By Gregg Hurwitz & Ethan Van Sciver

Batman: The Dark Knight has been the black sheep of the New 52 Batfamily of books. It’s been a bit darker and a bit more horror-tinged than the others and has flown almost completely under the radar, despite having featured art from David Finch. Maybe that will change. This week sees the debut of new artist Ethan Van Sciver, and despite the fact that he has ever been able to maintain a monthly schedule for too long, I’m very excited to see what he has to bring to Gotham. I’ve always enjoyed his more lanky and angular take on Batman and it will be fun to see what he can do every month with The Dark Knight and his twisted adversaries.

Masters of the Universe: The Origin of He-Man #1

By Joshua Hale Fialkov & Ben Oliver

We know he has the power. But how did he manage to get the power? There isn’t as wide a gulf in the sincerity to irony ratio as you might think with this one, all thanks to Joshua Hale Fialkov’s involvement. If he brings the same level of pathos to this as he did with the Skeletor origin, we’re looking at George R. R. Martin level palace intrigue and chilling sorcery.

Comments

  1. Absolutely agree about Batman: The Dark Knight. I’ll miss Finch’s art but I’m excited to see what happens in this next arc.

  2. The coloring of He-Man’s reflection makes him look like Faker (orange hair, blue skin). I haven’t been down with the mythology since 1983 when I was 7 and actually playing with He-Man and Faker. I’ll be interested to hear what everyone thinks about this issue even though I’m not pulling it myself.

  3. Not that it really has anything to do with the subject at hand, but I have always loved that scene from Citizen Kane — Welles’ charm & charisma were spellbinding . . .

  4. It sucks that I’m reading Invincible in trades. Whats even worse is that I accidentally saw the cliffhanger ending of last issue. I need to catch up.

    • I have the huge Invincible omnibus sitting on my shelf… I really keep meaning to crack it open. Most guys here seem to love it!

  5. When I was a kid in the 80’s I used to read everything Batman… I should really give it a shot again. I may be way off, but Ethan Van Sciver always reminds me of Brian Bolland somehow in the way he draws. And that is NOT a bad thing…

  6. The Origin of Skeletor issue was great. I’m on board for the He-Man.

  7. Its far from a light week for me, but I still plan on picking up He-Man.

  8. If my LCS has it, I’ll check out He Man.
Invincible is already a pull for me.

  9. I love Batman the Dark Knight but i treat i feel like it doesn’t quite know its place among the New 52 bat books. It’s not as dark as Snyder’s Batman nor does it have the good dichotomy of Batman and Robin or the “street level” that Detective Comics seems to take.I suppose you could say that its Batman’s horror title but with Death of the Family that’s become Batman.

Oh well.I like the book but if it gets cancelled i won’t be too upset.

  10. Glad to see Gregg Hurwitz is still on writing duties–he has a nice sense of character and dialogue–I recommend his novels as well.
