iFlashback! September 24th, 2003

It’s time for iFlashback! A weekly feature in which we take a look at some comics that were on sale nine years ago. Why nine years and not ten? Well because our Mondays in 2012 sync up with the Wednesdays of 2003.

So jog down memory lane with me. The date is September 24th, 2003. The number one film at the box office is Underworld and these are some of the comics at your local comic book shop.

That was the week that was in comics. Batman #619 was the best selling and most anticipated book of the month. It was the conclusion of the polarizing Hush storyline and it got two wraparound covers. I bought the villains one. Alan Moore had a comic out. I also remember my friend raving about Wake the Dead claiming it was going to be bigger than The Walking Dead, which had also just arrived. Alright folks, did you read any of these? If so let us know.

Comments

  1. I know I read Batman, because I really enjoyed Hush.

I also know I read Flash…..but can’t remember whatever happened to him!

    • Because of the miscarriage of Linda and Walley’s children by Reverse Flash, Wally ask The Spectre (Hal Jordan) to make everyone forget he was the Flash. But the kicker was, he also made Wally forget too.

And that story arc (not my favorite of the entire John’s run) is just Wally trying to figure out who he was and how he got where he was.

  2. I really liked that Mystique series. I had the first couple trades and then floppies to finish. Gave them to my brother in law at some point.

  3. I didn’t get in on Promethea until the trades came out, but I definitely need to reread that soon.

  4. That batman heroes cover is pretty sweet. Is that huntress in the middle? I’d love that poster.

  5. Born #4 – By Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Tom Palmer
Never heard of this series but War+Ennis+Max+Robertson=has to be good. Right?

  6. Garth Ennis doing a Vikings comic, even if it ties into Thor, has gotta be gory as fuck and amazing to read.

  7. AW MAN! I love iFlashback, I was like 17 and I remember actually going to the shop to pick up that issue of the flash. It’s in my closet like 4 feet away right now. My friend had turned me on to the flash with the Zoom arc, and I was hooked. This brings back so many good memorie, thanks for this.

  8. Looking back, this was a good week.

My top picks were Batman #619, the Hush conclusion, Empire #3 from Mark Waid & Barry Kitson and Red #3 from Warren Ellis & Cully Hamner.

  9. Flash #202? Will we ever see a comic hit that high a number ever again in this age of renumbering?
