It’s time for an iFlashback, a weekly feature in which we take a look at some comics that were on sale nine years ago. Why nine and not ten? Our Mondays and Wednesdays used to sync up, but 2004 was a leap year so we are off by a day. Jog down memory lane with me. The date is June 23rd, 2004 the number one film at the box office is Dodgeball and these are some of the books that are on the stands at your local comic shop.

That was the week that was in comics! Astonishing X-men delivers its second issue and Marvel prepares for the release of Spider-Man 2. So, did you read anything that came out this week? If you did be sure to let us know what you thought.
That’s one of my favorite Astonishing covers. That run was so good.
Man, I hated that Superman story.
“Fuckin’ Chuck Norris.”
I really dug the Stephanie Brown Robin look. Her time as Robin should have been much, much longer.
I totally agree. I love the idea of a female Robin. I remember being so excited when Stephanie got the nod and it was over in like three issues.
+1
Loved the Stephanie Brown as Robin storyline
Only read Astonishing X-Men and Robin from this list. In honor of just seeing Much Ado About Nothing, I need to Reread Whedon’s run on X-Men.
I just recently bought the Grant Morrison New X-men trades followed up by the first 2 Astonishing X-men trades by Whedon. I love them all, some great runs and a great story overall.
The Witching was a really good little Vertigo book, definitely worth searching for in back issue bins
Just “Astonishing X-Men” and Superman for me, neither really blew me away but I’d pick X-Men over that Superman story any day. From the thumbnail I thought Final Crisis was on this list.
Is it just me or does that Robin cover look weird? Like Stepahnie is sticking her butt towards the viewer or something.
With that in mind, take a look at where Batman’s gaze falls… The whole thing seems a little weird…
You’re right. I’m having flashbacks of those Bat-porns.
Batman really needs to start recruiting older sidekicks…
No compliants here, although I think most sidekicks tend to be kids or teenagers. Maybe we could say “No more Robins” instead. And bring back Orpheus, Onyx, and Tarantula.
Astonishing X-Men and Captain America for me.
And also, unfortunately, Spider-Man 509, which was the beginning of the “Gwen Stacey banged Green Goblin” story.
I’ve read two of these comics!
Astonishing X-Men #2 and the Stephanie Brown Robin comic!
Is any one else creeped out by the Wonder Woman comic?
Not me, after gay Joker and transvestite Joker it sort of seems kitsch in comparison in my mind.
I just started reading Astonishing X-men for the first time. It’s been rad!
Rucka had a great run on Wonder Woman
From that list, only Astonishing X-Men. What a great book. Wish they would have just ended it after Whedon’s run.
Was the Doc Ock Year One series any good? The team of Wells and Andrews has piqued my curiosity.
Keep trying to read that Azzarello/Lee Superman run and every time I stop. It’s just not possible for me cause it’s so boring. Also, that Doc Ock Year One has a fantastic creative team! Yet another series I’ll need to find during my stay at NYCC.
Here are some other big events, births, and deaths to occur on June 23rd:
Births
-1967: President Lyndon B. Johnson and Russian Premier Alexei Kosygin meet for a 3-day conference in Glassboro, NJ. (I mention this just because I live right next to Glassboro and they met at my college in Rowan University.)
Births
-1955: Glen Danzig
-1956: Randy Jackson
-1964: Joss Whedon
-1980: Becky Cloonan
Deaths
-2006: Aaron Spelling
-2009: Ed McMahon
-2011: Peter Falk
Man I loved that Kev story, it was wonderfully twisted. I also miss me some Rucka Wonder Woman.
Rucka was writing Wonder Woman? Was it any good?
it was fantastic! Easily my favorite run on the character. He “got it.”
Strong week for covers. I could give that JC Astonishing X-Men cover credit for getting me back into comics for awhile at that time, saw it, they were already on about issue 7, went back and got 1-current and loved it. 1st comics run I read after about 7 yrs of here n’ there or comics abstinence altogether. Love that Johnson after Kirby Cap and would love to see more Tara McPhearson (The Witching).
