iFanboy Upstarts: Nic Klein

When you're browsing through covers after covers of fabulous full color art that adorn new comics at your local comic stores, it takes a lot to garner a double-take, but Nic Klein has a habit of doing that to me every time. In today's edition of iFanboy Upstarts, we look at illustrator Nic Klein.

Klein first popped up to me in one of the most unlikeliest of places: doign covers for a relaunch of Marvel's mid-level series New Warriors. Although the story inside failed to grab hold of me, Klein's covers were addictive. Klein's work was next seen on some of Marvel's cosmic titles and continued as a covers-only artist for sometime. But in 2009 he and writer Ivan Brandon branched out to do an under-appreciated Image miniseries titled Viking. Over the course of five issues, this one-time cover artist turned in some amazing sequential pages. As it turns out, soemone at DC was reading as both Klein and Brandon were picked up by DC to work on their Doc Savage series. Since then Klein has continued doing interior work here at there with a story in the recent JSA 80-Page Giant #11 with covers at both the Big Two. Klein's name wasn't amongst the credits for DC's fall 52 relaunches but I'd bet hard money on Klein showing up sooner than you think.

  7. I couldn’t make any sense out of the story in Viking, but the art made the book worth trying.  He’s definitely an artist I’ll look out for.

  8. That first one should be a poster that I want to hang. Is it a poster?
