‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’

GI Joe_Retaliation_Poster2After a teensy six month delay for rewrites and reshoots when the producers realized that it might be a bad idea to kill off the bona fide movie star in the first five minutes, G.I. Joe: Retaliation has finally arrived!

(While we have added more Channing Tatum, we have lost the creepy Snake Eyes mouth, and thank God Larry Hama for that!)

The first film received some mixed reviews but I quite enjoyed it (in fact, as I write this I just finished watching it again in preparation for seeing this). It really captured that crazy improbable hi-tech global-spanning adventure that always categorized the best G.I. Joe stories from the cartoon. Apparently they’ve pared things down to the basics for the sequel, eliminating most of the characters from the first film and hopefully those dumb acceleration suits too.

In the course of paring things down they’ve also upped the star power with the addition of Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson as the original G.I. Joe and Roadblock, respectively.

Are you going to see G.I. Joe: Retaliation? Of course you are! So let’s talk about it!

If you haven’t seen the movie yet be forewarned – there be SPOILERS ahoy! So don’t scroll down any further if you are sensitive to that kind of thing.

  1. Aside from the acceleration suits and pretty pointless love affair with Baroness and Duke (although Sienna Miller looked great playing her), I enjoyed it for what it was, a fun, fast paced action adventure with ninjas, vipers, Zartan and Destro. It is titled Rise of Cobra which should shut enough ppl up about Cobra Commander not looking like himself yet, he will in the new one along with what looks like they went back to the drawing board and took all the Cobra inspiration they could from vehicles like the H.I.S.S., Viper, troopers, Crimson Guards…Firefly gets his grey Camo outfit, ninja/saboteur that is a favorite of mine and love that they’re using him as he didn’t get enough credit in the 80’s. Destro got his mask in the end of the last one and would love to see him and Baroness in here somewhere. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are the main fun for me and Scarlet looks sexy as hell. I’d like to see them take Zartan and get him looking like he should cause that hood, make up and color scheme is classic. Bruce Willis playing the 1st G.I.Joe (like the 6th scale dolls that stated it all 30 years before the beloved 80’s property we all know, and Rock has proven to be a charismatic talent and Roadblock is perfect for him, they still have a whole plethora of characters to use in this world and many are great as cameos, others like Beachhead, Low-Light, Sci-Fi….B.A.T.S., etc are great for cameo’s that lead into bigger roles for the next movie. Major Bluud!

    • Jesus, man. Leave some pauses for your readers. Maybe some transitions?

    • I enjoy reading the jsakids comments..
This is a comments section vada .. not professional writing 101.

    • I never said I didn’t like it, nor did I imply that professional writing was required.

    • If you say so.

    • Yep. I do

    • Last word! Ha ha, I win!

    • @vadamowens Thanx for the tip, I’ll keep that in mind when I’m spewing thoughts on G.I.Joe next time as for pauses, you can pause anytime you like and wherever there’s a period or comma. Where in that rant was a transition necessary? Give me an example please. And thanx for enjoying my comments to you and ilovecomics. I vent long winded comments own here cause I find it therapeutic, I’m aware of they’re structure and the whole thing doesn’t need a reply, if your looking deeper into it which I appreciate, pick something I said and elaborate.

    • This has been blown way out of context.

    • @vadamowens Definitely,no big deal. I’ll try and keep em’ paced for others to follow where I can. It read like one big sentence with more than one subject in a cpl parts that should’ve been separated for others to grasp where I’m coming from.

  2. I liked the first film too. It was far from perfect but it was an action/adventure film and it entertained (which is why we go see movies for in the first place!).

So yeah, me and my wife will go see the sequel in the weeks to come!

    Yo Joe!

  3. i really think they should have left that “original gi joe” thing alone.
just left it out the film completely.
those are two different universes and two different generations to appeal to.
    meh.
i thought the first one was good. it was gi joe.
just as crazy as anything that was on the show or in the comics.
i’ll probably give this one a looksy.

  4. I love this film summer started yo joe

  5. Caught it last night. It was far superior to the original film, and probably as close as we’ll ever see to the world of the cartoon being translated on screen. There were some really clunky moments (just about anything involving the plot mechanics of the ninja conflict), but it was great seeing a proper Cobra Commander on screen. Should you see it in the theater? Nah, you can probably wait until blu-ray.

Are you guys going to do a special edition podcast for this?

  7. I’m taking my wife to see it this weekend for her birthday. I’m sure she’s as excited as I am to see it (NOT!).

  8. This movie release is going great for me.. ive got a 700 dollar ebay bid on just 12 of the figures i had from back when i was little kid. Yay! For once keeping a card backing is paying off. 36 dollars retail turned into 700 dollars and counting.. thats better than apple stock.

  9. The first movie was terrible, and I’ll tell you why. The invulnerable zombie Cobra guys were a terrible idea. They should have been the standard guys in blue, so we could have had a decent fight at least once. As it was, the Joe’s (as a whole) never really got to deliver a badass moment.

So the best of the best were ineffectual for most of the movie, and it wasn’t a satsifying experience. At least for me.

Also, Cobra Commander and Baroness were all too neatly tied together w/ Tatum. That wasn’t needed AT ALL, and just the made the whole thing less “global terrorism” and more “days of our lives”.

Still, the scenes of Snake Eyes killing ninjas on a mountain side are too tempting to resist. But maybe when it’s on DVD.

I really liked Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes in the first movie. From what I’ve heard, the two of them have a larger role in this one. I’ll probably check this out at a matinee.

  11. It’s been a very, very long time since I walked out of a movie. G.I. Joe: Retaliation bored me to it after 1 hour.

  12. It was ok, a million times better than the first. The action set pieces were amazing as we’re the ninjas but it didn’t need to be converted into 3D as it didn’t add anything to the scenes. Flint was the most wooden character since Pinocchio. The lines were so cheese a times you could see Bruce Willis trying not to laugh. Overall it was entertaining. I’m just glad I have a monthly unlimited cinema pass and didn’t have to pay for it.

  13. This was a TON of fun, as close as you can get to filming an episode of the classic cartoon. Presidential impersonator? Lady Jaye showing some leg? HISS tanks? Get me in there again!

  14. The first G.I. Joe movie was horrendous, simply horrible, so I won’t rush to see the sequel. For critics who want to know what horrendous is, the first G.I. Joe should be your reference point. You can also reference all of the Mission Impossible movies, except for the second one, which was only ok, as being horrible.

So, when a superhero movie like “Green Lantern” or a sci fi movie like “John Carter, comes out, you should ask yourself, “Was it as bad as “G.I. Joe?” Clearly “Green Lantern,” and “John Carter” were far, far superior to “Joe,” so the over zealously negative reviews for those films were way out of line.

  15. The best things about this movie?

    -The Mountaintop chase scene
    -Jonathan Pryce chewing the scenery.

Apart from that this was a dull and very idiotic action movie. The direction was pretty bad and the writing was almost cringe worthy as Batman and Robin. If you find a YouTube video of the chase scene or all of Pryce’s quips I’d recommend that more than the entire movie.

Here’s a link of my full review if you wanna see more of my thoughts on it!

  16. I saw it on Friday with some of my kids. It was good for what it was trying to be and i had fun for the hour and a half + that i was in the theater. Having an Iron man 3 and The Wolverine trailers play in front of it did not hurt either. A good popcorn flick and better than alot of the crap that is releases into theaters on a weekly basis. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are still my favorites as they have been since the 80s when I was a kid watching the cartoon and playing with the toys.

  18. LOVED THIS MOVIE, so much better then the 1st one, though I don’t think the 3d was that good of a idea

  19. So…….Um. I don’t know if I missed anything or what but. They did rewrites for more Duke A.K.A.. Mr Taum but yet he at he still dies at the beginning . Was the plan for him to die even earlier in frirst GI Joe 2? If so why even rewrite if he in firs place? If he isn’t going to play a bigger part in the whole movie? I rather have more Duke then Filnt that’s for sure. I did enjoy Adrianne Palicki A.K..A. Lady Jaye A.K.A. Tyra FNL one the best TV shows ever. Can so some please help me here or did I post this late?

For those who have seen this, what did you think of Storm Shadow in this movie? I thought he was the best in the last movie.
