C2E2 2011: GHOST RIDER Revs Up a New Ongoing Series

There's a new Ghost Rider on the road, and he's safety conscious!

During their Fear Itself panel at Chicago's C2E2, Marvel announced an all new Ghost Rider ongoing series from Rob Williams and Mattew Clark, set to debut this June with a special #0.1 issue (because #1 isn't nearly indicative enough of "new reader friendly). Then things really accelerate in July with the new #1.

"FEAR ITSELF strikes the Marvel Universe and if there is one hero in the Marvel Universe who knows anything about Fear – it’s Ghost Rider. But the wielder of the Spirit of Vengeance is not who you think it is. Last time we met a new Ghost Rider, it was Danny Ketch and he turned the Marvel Universe on its head. So just what do rising star scribe Rob Williams and newly-Marvel-Exclusive artist Matthew Clark have planned for the Ghost Rider mythos…and what does it mean for FEAR ITSELF?"

This one's pretty interesting. Not part of Marvel's "Big Shots" trio of reintroductions (Moon Knight, Daredevil, and Punisher), but not a limited series either. This new Ghost Rider lands somewhere in…ahem…the middle of the road. And it looks like we're riding sidecar with another new Ghost Rider. Is it someone we already know?

I think I can speak for the entire staff when I say it'd be cool to see Sam Elliott under that helmet.

Hey, how's about some more art? The one on the left is the cover to July's #1.

Ghost Rider returns this June!

Comments

  1. woo hooo

  2. That is an awful promotion poster with him having a helmet.

Not really much interested for it though. I’ve tried Jason Aaron’s run and I didn’t enjoy it as much, so I doubt anyone else can make it fun either.

  3. I loved Jason Aaron’s run, it is probably going to be up there with the likes of Ennis’ Punisher Max run as the quintessential run on the character. Ever since his run ended I have been on a Ghost Rider drought & I am very much looking forward to this new series. Also that left cover is breathtakingly awesome, if that is by Matthew Clark then I am so in for this series no doubt!

  4. I think I’m going to stick with Jason Aaron’s epic run and leave that as my one, great, Ghost Rider story.

  5. I’m definitely onboard.  Ghost Rider is my guilty pleasure character. Though I’m not sure about a new GR, we already have two running around.  Is this a new trend in comics, just to have multiple versions of a character (Batman, Flash, Green Lantern Ghost Rider) running around?

And this .1 idea is getting out of hand.  0.1?  Honestly?

  6. Alpha Flight also has a 0.1, it’s ridiculous.

  7. cancelled

  8. @kidCharlemagne  Ditto!

I never got GR.  I hear good things about Jason Aarons run but just never picked it up. Thats the same thing im going to with this one.

  9. @SplifEOC  Aaron’s run is collected in a nice Omnibus collection, its entirely self-contained and awesome!

  10. Danny Ketch turned the Marvel Universe on it’s head?

    Serious question.

  11. Also, the 0.1 numbering is actually marvel phasing out old numbering. They’re gradually shifting to dewey decimal.

  12. Can I just have a johnny blaze 70s style series maybe? (and yes I realize that already exists) but I wants more.

  13. Writer? Artist? Anything? Nothing? Meh. Color me disinterested until they figure that out. Or rather, I’ll buy the Aaron/Moore/Haut/Boschi Omnibus instead. That was some goood ghost-ridin’.

    # 0.1 makes me think there should be another nine 0.1 issues before we get to launch the title.

@clintaa – 70s style action series is pretty much what Jason Aaron wrote before-hand.

  14. @OttoBott  yeah I really need to pick that up.

  15. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@OttoBott  The writer is Rob Williams. The artist is Matthew Clark. It’s all up there.

  16. Is anyone familiar with Williams’ work?  A quick look at comicbookdb and I don’t recognize any of his work–looks like a lot of one shot/anthology/tie-in stuff, plus some Star Wars and Ghostbusters.  Apparently he also did a Shadowland: Ghost Rider book.  I’ve never in my life had any interest in Ghost Rider, always thought he was just too silly, though I am interested in reading Jason Aaron’s work on the character at some point.  I’m mildly tempted to just pick up the first issue of this to give it a try, but that’s how I end up with dozens of unread comics laying around my apartment.

  17. @Paul – I skimmed and then wordsearched “writer.” When neither turned it up, I crapped out that comment and then took a nap. Thanks.

  18. Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you.

  19. williams did a great robocop series a few months back

  20. I’ll pass on this one. Never saw the appeal of Ghost Rider.

  21. woo hoo!  Ghostie rules!  helmet is kinda neat but stupid, but makes me think he changed while he was riding around as a normal human and didn’t have time to take the helmet off, that helmet is going to stink and all the lining is going to be burnt up, no good.

that aside, I hope this series is good, and I hope they don’t tell the freaking origin story again, just deal with it, demon that shares a body with human and move on. could be some really cool stuff here.

and it has motorcycles, I”m sold!  ðŸ˜‰

  22. @clintaa  fully agree. Everyone talks about Aaron’s run but this character has sucked since Hamme Lame. Very difficult for me to still say since he was, at one time, my all time favorite character.

    LOVE the Blaze series too!

  23. @gobo  Dammit, I wish you hadn’t said something about AAron’s run being collected in an omnibus.  Now I gotta go buy it.  😉

  24. So from the comment all I get is that since half of the people havent heard of matthew clark, or  rob williams this book is going to suck?

seriously having that mentality is so unreasonable. Every WRITER and ARTIST has to start somewhere, so before you shoot down the title and say its going to be horrible why not give it a shot when it comes out.

Just because writers and artist on a title arent “WELL KNOWN” doesnt mean the book is going to be horrible.

Thats the problem in comics today, so many critics who will judge a book before even reading it, or checking it out.

no wonder the industry is failing.

  25. @4iiii you make a GREAT point.  before Bendis was Bendis he was a nobody that Joe & Jimmy gave Daredevil & Ultimate Spider-Man to write.

i don’t have any affinity for Ghost Rider, however, based on my love of Aaron’s Scalped i gave his Ghost Rider a try.  Aaron’s Ghost Rider f’n rocked — hard.

i’ll give this new series a shot, but my budget is spread thiiiiiin.  the creative team will have to sell me on their take, quickly.

Rucka’s Punisher?  instant sell for me.  i love his work and his story sensibilities.  his writing clicks for me.

  26. @JNewcomb

Yeah. It was back in the 90’s, and the new Ghost Rider was a BADASS ANTI-HERO! Plus the first issue of the Ketch run had a GLOW IN THE DARK COVER! Super rare! I know it was cuz QVC said so. When I’m ready to retire, I’ll sell my copy just so I can have that beach house in Cabo.

  27. @iSpiderMan

Yeah man, you have no idea how many awesome writers I got to check out just by giving new titles a shot. Hey it cant hurt thats all I am trying to say, I havent reached Aarons run on GR yet, because I am behind on tons of titles and have dozens of read piles all over my room haha.

But hey the art looks good, the writing might be awesome we will see

as far as RUCKA/PUNISHER I am IN!!! Love Greg Ruckas stuff high end violence with hopefully a touch of political drama.  Rucka can possibly live

  28. @gobo  I picked up the Ghost Rider Omnibus over the weekend and read it in about a day.  Thanks for the heads up.  Great stuff.

  29. I’m excited about this. I’ve been looking to scratch my Ghost Rider itch ever since Aaron finished up his phenomenal run on GR. The only book GR’s been in lately is Shadowland, and Heroes for Hire, and that’s simply not enough.
