BOOM! Studios Acquires Archaia Entertainment

Deadline reports that comics publisher BOOM! Studios (Planet of the Apes, Peanuts) has acquired Archaia Entertainment (Mouse Guard, Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand). The latter shall live on as an imprint within BOOM!.

This merger comes after months of speculation within the industry of https://www.boomtownbingo.com/ about similar indie publisher consolidations, usually centered around BOOM! Studios in particular. BOOM! and its all-ages imprint KaBOOM! (once BOOM! Kids) boast an impressive library of licensed comics as well as creator-owned properties.

They’ve also got their first feature film on the way with this summer’s 2 Guns. Archaia is better known for original properties and self contained graphic novels, though its major licensed property is a big one. Their Jim Henson adaptations have won the publisher numerous awards and accolades in recent years.

Here’s hoping both groups profit from the merger and that Archaia, now an imprint of BOOM!, continues to produce some of the best graphic novels and hardcover collections around.

  1. For some reason I thought this was the company that produced Atomic Robo. But that’s Red 5 or something. I’m not sure what to make of the news itself, except indie companies grouping together (which is smart probably). I think Archia had some stuff I wanted to check out because of FCBD but I’d have to check.

  2. Love Archaia. So many great books like Rust, Sharaz-De, Siegfried, Genetiks and Strange Attractors. Like Paul said, I hope they continue to produce some of the best books around.

  3. I think Rust and the original Mouse Guard are the only Archaia I’ve read, but they’re always on my “To Get” list. They make some gorgeous books. BOOM! puts out some cool stuff, too (Irredeemable, which I’m woefully behind on). Seems like a good match.

Showing how little I know about the comics industry, I would have told you that Archaia was a bigger company than BOOM!.

  5. This sounds like a good match. They compliment each other well.

  6. What’s the new name? KhaBoom? ArBoom? Boomchaia?

  7. Is it wrong to dislike this because I like one far better than the other? I’m a little worried Archaia may get further lost in the shuffle as opposed to getting a boost. I might be way off though.

  8. Interesting.

It’s a good pairing though and I think we’re gonna get some good stuff out of this eventually.

  9. This sounds like a win win to me. Boom gets some IP and some talent, Archaia gets on more shelves.

  10. Should be good for both parties…Archaia has such a good logo, I hope they incorporate it into the BOOM!.

  11. It would be cool to see both continue to do what they do well.
