As 2012 draws to a close, a new era for the Avengers dawns. Today we’ve got your first look at the stunning pages from Avengers #1 by Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opena and Dean White.
AVENGERS #1 (SEP120526)
Written by JONATHAN HICKMAN
Art by JEROME OPENA
Colors by DEAN WHITE
Cover by DUSTIN WEAVER
On Sale – 12/5/2012
These pages are unlettered, so we don’t really know what’s going on. Whatever it is, it’s majestic and world-shaking and even a tad grave. The scope and roster of the Avengers is about to expand exponentially, and with that comes a greater sense of purpose and gravity. Are you excited? We are.
Now, how’s about that preview from superstar Jerome Opena.
Look for Avengers #1 and #2 in December.
Wow.
The art is very inviting!
With three of the four pages in the preview consisting of only three panels, I guess any hope of decompressed storytelling in the Marvel NOW! is lost.
Will definitely check out the first issue!
Six of those 3-panel pages are entirely new scenes and settings; that’s an odd definition of ‘decompressed’.
Now this is becoming a problem for my wallet. Although I loved Hickman’s run on Fantastic Four & FF as well as Opena’s art on Uncanny X-Force I was thinking of waiting to get this in trade. But I definitely will be getting this first issue now.
Opena art is just something beautiful to marvel at. If he puts as much effort into Avengers the way he did into Uncanny X-Force, alongside Hickmans writing, this should be a great book.
Now, I am all kinds of excited for this book — Hickman’s gonna bring the goods, and Opeña is way awesome too, but…
DEAN WHITE, PEOPLE!! 🙂
We’re truly living in a golden age.
I agree, seeing Dean White’s name on there has me excited. He makes everything look phenomenal.
AIM messing with Hyperion, the Shi’Ar Imperial Guard on their last legs, crazy Omega-Demon thing, Thor and Hawkeye looking at something very bright, an Alien star armada, ruined Iron Men (Including Iron Man 2020…how long is Hickman gonna stay on this title?), Stark looking at a very Hickmany circle chart, and Stark and Rogers talking (possibly reminiscing about the good old days)… Looks to me like Christmas is coming early this year
Take my money now!
Ahhhhh damn you Hickman, I was so going to resist your siren song, but I CANNOT!
Ahhh man, I was going to pass on this book. Can’t do that after seeing this!
Damn it, now I’m gonna have to get this book. Looks great!
Looks Great. three issues a month at $4?
waiting for the trade:)
Completely agree. I’m jumping to trade only Bendis is done. Simply can’t afford single issues at the rate Marvel is putting them out.
Wait…this is coming out three time a month? No way I can afford that. Damnit!
@USPUNX: I believe that AVENGERS is coming out twice a month and NEW AVENGERS is once a month for a total of three Avengers books a month from Hickman that are connected in the way that FANTASTIC FOUR and FF were connected. I believe that NEW AVENGERS is going to be $2.99.
@Conor: Gotcha, thanks for the info. Going to have to consider dropping a book or two if I want to pick all these up.
…DROOLING…
I know I’m already going to get it anyway, but FUCK YEAH!
Looks absolutely incredible
I have no doubts this’ll be good and I’m in for the run, the only unknown I’m anticipating now is who’ll step in after Opena’s intro arc (not that I expect some jarring style-shift with Dean White holding things together)…

It looks soooo good!
I want it now! Not December 5th!
Amazing. Very excited to see where Hickman takes this.
Marvel WOW!
(1) the use of the circles in the monitors Tony Stark is viewing made me smile. It’s nice to see Hickman continues to use the motif.
(2) is Hyperion going to be Hickman’s rebuttal to Bendis’ Sentry? And is this a new Hyperion, or the one from the old Squadron Supreme ( the one from before JMS)
As to (1), I’m thinking that’s an infographic for the structure of Hickman’s Avengers lineup. I couldn’t tell you what it all means, but the concentric rings around the A logo might imply leadership levels (Cap’s star and an Iron Man-like icon both point to circles on the inner ring). Very cool!
Hickman and Opena are enough reason for me to check this out, when has Opena not delivered solid art? I like the team roster as well for the most part but think with Hulk as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Wolverine always everywhere, over exposed and with numerous books of his own, they would be better off replaced on this roster by a couple of other under used characters like Vision and Goliath or something. Love the New Avengers line-up though, that team needed to actually feel “new” cause its been years since the Avengers disassembled and reassembled and that other roster seemed to no no longer be needed.
