After DUCKTALES, What Could Be Next From BOOM!’s line of Disney Comics?

With the release this week of BOOM! Studios’ DuckTales #1, its one more Disney animated relic that’s being brought back to life. Although Disney has pulled some comics from BOOM! to be published under it’s Marvel banner, BOOM! has weathered that storm and continued a line of classic cartoon-to-comic strips with Darkwing Duck, Chip ‘N Dale’s Rescue Rangers, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disney’s Comic & Stories. Marvel might be the place for modern Disney tales like the PIXAR films, Disney’s archives hold a lot of gems just waiting to be discovered and BOOM! has proven itself more than capable for the challenge.

From the immense archives of Disney projects, here’s several we’d love to see BOOM! Studios take a shot on:

The Adventures of the Gummi Bears

Often overlooked in the pantheon of Disney animated shows, it remains an iconic series to anyone who grew up in the late 80s or early 90s. It holds the distinction of being Disney’s first foray into animated television, and was inspired by then Disney CEO Michael Eisner and his son’s fascination with the candy gummy bears. The last new tale of the bears of New Gumbrea was shown in early 1991, and with the success of Darkwing Duck at BOOM! the time is right for a new batch of gummiberry juice.

The Seven Dwarfs

As the chief supporting cast of Disney’s first theatrical film, the Seven Dwarfs are beloved cartoon characters just dying for the spotlight. With Disney already working on an animated series titled 7D with these befuddled little people, the time is right to see these seven brothers take over comics as well.

Disney Princesses

What better way to encompass the various characters from Disney’s movies than an anthology/line of limited series under the popular moniker of Disney Princesses? You could tell shorter (or longer) stories of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel from the Little Mermaid and more in what could be a big seller outside the traditional direct market of comic books.

Villains Miniseries

Casting around to the flipside of that, what if BOOM! explored the dark side of Disney’s ouvre with a spotlight on the chief adversaries from their most popular series? You can already see villain-related products popping up everywhere from Wal-mart and Target to the Disney stores worldwide, and Disney Studios in Orlando has a store devoted just to villains. What if you told the origins of Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, or the Evil Queen’s side of the story of the events of Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs? This would be the place for that!

Comments

  1. Gargoyles!

  2. @heroville: that is an inspired thought!  Really enjoyed that show when it was coming out.

  3. Slave Labor Graphics did some gargolyle comics a few years ago, they were pretty good but they were bi-monthly and didn’t get alot of stock without special request which pretty much meant the end for the series.

  4. I forgot about the Adventures of Gummi Bears! Totally buy that book.

That and I also want a Gargoyles comic.

  5. Avatar photo Chris Arrant (@chrisarrant) says:

The SLG Gargoyles series was excellent, but short-lived. They even had original series creator Greg Weisman writing, but it failed to capture the hearts & wallets of comic-readers to keep it going.

  6. “Magic and Mystery are part of their History, along with the secret of gummy berry juice…” i loved that cartoon even though it unintentionally encouraged drug use. =p

  7. How about Tale Spin?

  8. Tailspin would be awesome.

  9. Gummi Bears and Talespin.  All I would ever want in the world.

  10. I would get home from school and watch that Disney block until I fell asleep on the couch everyday. I was a senior in High School at the time, and I’m not ashamed.

  11. Tale Spin!  We bought the 1st season on DVD and our 7 yr old son loves it.

  12. Surprised no one has mentioned Goof Troop.

  13. Roger Rabbit!

just no Quack Pack or Bonkers

  14. I would drop almost any book on my pull list to make room for a Gummi Bears comic.

  15. @tomdpimp- I’d take Bonkers over Marsupalami…But Talespin is on the top of my wish list…

  16. One more echo…The Gummi’s and Talespin!  Seriously though, I would do horrible things to make a Gummi Bears book happen…just sayin…

  17. Just gonna leave this here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRTSZZgCUik

God damn, those Disney television themes kick ass!

  18. Spin Gizmoduck out of Ducktales. Blatherin’ Blatherskite!

  19. Oh yeah, and Tailspin. Definitely that.

For that matter, partner with SquareEnix and put out an ongoing Kingdom Hearts book, set within the universe.

  20. Sorry to dash any hopes, but all the above mentioned Disney properties in the article are different licenses than what we currently hold…and we’ve been pretty open on our forum and on our Twitter that we are not pursuing any of these properties. (We get prodded all the time about TaleSpin, Gummi Bears and Gargoyles.) If you are a fan and want to see comics of these properties, I’d contact the @disneycomics twitter account and message them.

  21. @ChipMosher  Thanks for the information. I will go plead my case for a Gummi bears comic right now. Also, I will make sure I hit the comic store on my lunch break so I can get the new Incorruptible!

  22. @ChipMosher Thanks for the info! I appreciate this level of interaction with the fans. And, by the way, thanks for the Darkwing Duck comic, it’s honestly one of my favourite comics coming out right now.

  23. Hey everyone! We’re currently running a petition to get Disney/Marvel to do a TaleSpin comic!
