20th Century Fox Eyes MOON Man Duncan Jones for THE WOLVERINE?

Fitting in someone else's shoes is a hard thing — and finding the right person to replace director Darren Aronofsky in the big-budget sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine is even harder. And that's without taking into consideration the filming itself, which was originally planned take place in Japan. But it looks like Marvel has their eye on someone special.

After unsourced rumors last week put Duncan Jones (The Source Code, Moon) and David Slade (Twilight, Daredevil reboot) on the short list, we have news from the horse's mouth — well, one horse at least — that the rumors are true. While doing press for the recently released movie The Source Code, Jones told Empire Magazine that he had several meetings planned in Los Angeles, including one talking about The Wolverine. But he wasn't done yet — at last weekend's KAPOW! Convention, Jones went further into Logan's lair by comparing him with another popular superhero.

"[Wolverine is] more interesting to me than Batman," the director said, according to IGN."A good Wolverine film could be an amazing thing."

Is he saying there hasn't been a good Wolverine film yet? We're not touching that one — well, we'll hint at it — but the idea of a Duncan Jones-led exursion into Logan's time in Japan could be a potent thing. The Usual Suspects screenwriter Chris McQuarrie turned in a screenplay that numerous people in Hollywood have fawned over, and is reportedly based on the seminal Wolverine limited series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

Although Jones wasn't on our shortlist last month for potential replacements in the director's chair for The Wolverine, it's not for a dearth of talent. Jones showed his chops in The Moon, but the success — or failure — of The Source Code could easily color the director's chances to say SNIKT! with Hugh Jackman. Stay tuned!

  1. Great. I loved Moon and am really looking forward to Source Code coming out here in South Africa. I do find it interesting though that they’re going after such high caliber directors for Wolverine II though. Suoerman gets Zach Snyder but Wolverine 2 almost got Darren Aronofsky and will now probably get Duncan Jones? That’s just all kinds of weird.

  2. Moon was fantastic, this could be very good…

  3. I still think Fantastic Four would be a better fit for Zowie, but this could be cool too.

  4. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Loved both of his movies in a big, big way. The Rod Serling of his generation. Would I rather see him do more of these intimate SF sleepers? Absolutely. But this could potentially be a fun project and something that will make him lots of money to make more Moons and Sources Code.

  5. The Moon – super intersting- emotional- very intense world of a story

Source Code- retread sci fi tropes mixed with same old hero and the girl love story
    predictable hollywood garbage.

Hard to believe made by the same person-

    Toss up here-

  6. Moon is one of my favorite films of the past couple years. I haven’t seen Source Code yet. And for as retread as the trailer makes it look, it’s garnered mostly good reviews. I look forward to checking it out. I said before that Aronofsky was one of the few directors that would make me optimistic about another Wolverine movie. David Bowie Jr. would be another. I’m not as certain that he would be able to stand up to Fox regarding his artistic vision and them meddling with it as I was with Aronofsky. But that is secondary to getting a good director. I hope Jones gets the gig.

  7. Exciting…though for the record, it’s Chris McQuarrie, not Ralph.

  8. HAHAHA…Wolverine 2: Duncan’s Gate. Do you really think the suits @ Fox will let him have free reign. This, though not Fox, happened with Casino Royale. They think that young auteurs would make great big budget directors. I actually hope he DOESN’T take this film. But he will…

  9. Great upcoming director, but what do you expect, he’s David Bowie’s son. Would love to see him do some comic to film work, but i dont know if i could see him doing capes and tights. We’ll have to see.

  10. Haven’t seen Source Code. But I enjoyed Moon a great deal. I like the talent they’re seeking out for this one. Makes me optimistic.

@brassai2003: I’m confused. What happened (and how) with Casino Royale? And what does that have to do with anything? Martin Campbell was hardly a “young auteur” when he took on Casino Royale. In fact he had almost nothing under his belt but action movies. One of which was a Bond film (Goldeneye).

  11. Struggling to be interested in the idea of a Wolverine movie…and yet saw Source Code last week and thought it was awesome.  Compelling story, nice action with some simple yet touching human emotion.  Great stuff. So maybe he’s the man to get me interested…

  12. I want to see Source Code but I wasn’t a big fan of Moon if I’m honest. But he is a good director so maybe it’ll work?

  13. Did you add “the” to Moon and Source Code as a joke because it’s The Wolverine? If so, then awesome.
