Wonder Woman has had it with being told who she is! She wants the truth, to make it her own. At Wonder Woman’s royal behest, the Oracle telepathically teleport’s Diana to the past to witness first hand the circumstances of her Mother’s death. In a subtle Moses parallel, Hypolita squirrels a young Wonder Woman away, instructing her servants to care for her, protect her and educate her. The Amazon Queen then returns to fight a losing war against humans led by a presumably magically powered leader. In order to prevent revealing Diana’s location while bound by the lasso of truth, Hypolita throws herself in a pit of divine fire. This sacrificial self-immolation is a particularly poignant “this is Sparta” moment. We don’t yet know the identity of the leader of the attack on the amazons but we are getting clues. It is just enough to pique my curiosity.
Diana’s thoughts are now of vengeance. “I’ll kill them all”, she says. The Oracle reminds the young amazon of her duty as protector of the surviving amazons, which were scattered “to the four winds”. Diana takes this duty seriously and the rest of the story consists of Wonder Woman sniffing out a trail that eventually leads to an apparent Amazonian safe-house freshly discovered by the US army - or perhaps the secret service or even a more threatening organization?
JMS weaves in Diana’s necessity to regain her powers into the book very well. It would seem that the closer she gets to the truth the more powerful she becomes - how’s that for a theme? There are very exciting scenes of Wonder Woman taking risks and pushing herself despite not being at full power. She is ridiculously sexy in the scenes! The new costume looks brilliant in action!
I had never seen anything of Kramer’s art before and a cursory googling of his name yields few results. He is evidently a very skilled artist. The backgrounds are crisp and moody, creating a strong sense of place. Additionally, He makes the characters act well. I was particularly drawn to a panel of a pre-teen Diana somewhat mocking her superiors. The expression looks authentic and entertaining. It made me laugh a bit. The color palette is atmospheric due to the story taking place mostly at night. Coupled with Kramer’s clean lines and subdued textures it infuses the reading experience with an ambient and immersive tone.
On the surface this story is simply one of intrigue. What happened? Why? However, there are literary undertones if you are paying attention. Those themes are what draw me in the most. I’m looking forward to see those themes explored further and to read some great action/intrigue.
