Some people have already five starred this issue, and made it their pick of the week.  I am baffled.

After not being impressed with the Straczynski intro chapter in Wonder Woman #600, I expected this to be a really divisive first issue of his run.  People loving it, people hating it.  Lots of internet fist shaking.  But, having read it, I feel it’s very much a shoulder shrugger.

We don’t really learn anything new in this issue except for HOW Hippolyta dies.  It’s mostly just setup for the coming storyline.  In essence, classic Straczynski storytelling.  I don’t think this issue will change anyone’s perspective of him, or of Wonder Woman (since this is clearly only  a temporary change of the status quo).  If you love him, you’re probably going to love this issue.  If you don’t like him, you’re not going to hate this book, I just don’t think you’re going to care.  Costume issue aside (and, personally, I think it’s silly how people are up in arms over this), there’s nothing in the story that invoked any sort of reaction for me: positive, or negative.  It took a lot for me to muster the intensity to be neutral.  All we have here is an okay comic about a character that hasn’t been very popular recently.  Which, unfortunately, means that Straczynski has thus far failed to do what DC needs him to.  Because this NEEDED to be the issue that hooked people in.  I don’t think they wanted someone to slowly build the groundwork for a new arc, they wanted people to go “Fuck, yea, Wonder Woman rules now!” the way people went “Fuck yea!” over Brave And The Bold #33.  For me, this issue missed that mark, and it means I am not likely to add WW to my pull list again.

  1. @djd: Thanks.  I looked at the average rating when I wrote this, and it was a 4.9.  A 6 now seems…perhaps suspect.  Maybe I’m not as off the mark on this as I thought.  😉

  2. Dude, this issue totally got me to say "Fuck yeah WW rules now!". I am preaching the gospel of JMS’ Wonder Woman to everyone at the shop.
