Old Man Logan, the much delayed story line by Mark Millar and Steve MccNiven has finally wrapped up. A lot of people are raving about this series, and I thought I’d give some thoughts on it here. It was a good arc, but not a great one. All of the moments that people are freaking out over show both the strength and the weakness of this story. None of the things people like about this series are cool plot points. They are all just crazy, ultra violent moments. There are no plot twists or revelations in this series. After reading issue one, it was entirely predictable, with no twists or turns, no deep character moments, no new ideas. It was just a fun, violent romp. Now, there is nothing wrong with that, but i think people are carrying on like it is a masterpiece and it is far from it. The artwork is stunning, obviously, but the story is very lacking. it is predictable, it is one note played over and over again, and it is stretched out beyond belief. If this was the 70s or 80s, this would have been a “Done in one” story. Even now, it should probably have only been 3 or 4 issues. The only thing keeping it going was Millar’s sick sense of violence and crazy small concepts. Nothing in the plot made this story have to be 8 issues long. It was like Millar just thought of too many small moments to fit into a 4 issue arc, so they stretched it out with Venom dinosaurs, Hank Pym’s ass used as a tunnel, and Bruce Banner being written ridiculously out of character. Ultimately, while this series was a lot of fun, I feel it missed the mark as to being the greatest Wolverine story of all time, which is how it was advertised.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Why did i say John Cassady over and over? I know it was Steve McNiven. I THOUGHT McNiven in my head. Yet i typed Cassady. Maybe I was subconsciously wishing i was reading Astonishing X-Men instead of this……

  2. JohnVFerrigo: It’s like we’re twins … you’re a little bit nicer on the account of the 2 rating instead of my 1.

  3. Well, I think it had a few nice little moments or ideas that just weren’t explored in favor of violence for the sake of violence. I did enjoy portions of it, so i won’t go with the 1. But it’s nice to see i have a twin. The odd thing is, I’m really only nice on the internet. in real life, i’m an asshole. I’m kind of like Bizarro Internet person.
