Since the start of the post-Messiah Complex era in X-men, I've been feeling a little 'divided' (groan, sorry) about the direction of this line. 'X-men: Legacy' I unabashedly love; 'X-Force' and 'Young X-men' I actively dislike. It's Ed Brubaker's 'Uncanny X-men' that's been getting most of my ambivalent reaction.
With issue 497, I'm happy to say, I've learned to stop worrying and love this title again. This comic was just straight-up fun, with two teams of X-men on different sides of the world, fighting bad guys via resourceful use of their powers. "Resourceful" in Cyclops' case meaning 'hide behind your girlfriend's impenetrable skin' and in Wolverine's meaning 'fall real good'; Bru writes very pragmatic superheroes, and I always enjoy seeing these action scenarios that seem based on what somebody would actually do in the circumstances, not just what looks cool. Mike Choi's art -- very clear and easy to follow -- fits this story-telling style well.
Along with being a thoroughly entertaining story in its own right, this issue also takes some steps in moving the plot forward. What looked to be a random villain in the Russia plot turns out to be someone with an agenda tying back to the mutant decimation, one of those important story points that has mostly been left hanging in the main X-books. And speaking of tying back in to decimation -- I'm convinced that the mystery sorceress in San Francisco will turn out to be Wanda Maximoff, who was responsible for depowering most of the world's mutants in the first place. I've been hoping the X-men's story would circle back to her, for a while, and I'm crossing my fingers that these two stories are going to dovetail, with Wanda at the nexus.

Story: 4 - Very Good

I think that this review is closest to my own impressions of this issue. I would differ in one area, however. I think that Mike Choi and Sonia Oback’s art was fantastic. The hippie Emma & Scott were a revelation.
Is the sorceress Wanda? Cool idea, but I actually hope not. I’m a bit sick of the Scarlett Witch having the ability to define the Marvel Universe. On the other hand, I can’t come up with a better hypothesis.
" I’m a bit sick of the Scarlett Witch having the ability to define the Marvel Universe."
Whether it’s a good idea or not — and I’m not convinced it was — House of M and Decimation did happen, and the character of Wanda is out there. I’d rather see it followed up rather than left hanging and it seems like a story with a lot of potential. If this turns out to be just a random villain with reality-altering powers it won’t feel as satisfying as if it’s really going back to pick up a plot thread. I trust Brubaker to be able to do this without making it too convoluted.
I thought Wanda was in Europe? Not to say she can’t travel but every appearence of her since M-day’s been overseas. She still get around though.
The last time we saw Wanda was at the end of ‘Endangered Species,’ which happened before Messiah Complex. I’d say she’s had plenty of time to get to San Francisco. Also, there are references to the sorceress’s followers having found her somewhere and brought her to the city, and to her not seeming to really know who she was — which fits with the ‘New Avengers’ issue she’s been in, as well as the Endangered Species appearance.
BTW, I agree with the comment above about the quality of the art — I probably would have ranked it as a five (I never keep track of the numbers to know that I’m doing this consistently) except that I’ve seen so many previews of the cover that I’m almost used to it by now. Also, my shop gave me a variant, which wasn’t marked as a variant, which had Cyclops looking Skrull-like. Which alarmed me!
hmmm..that’s a very compelling argument. Bru? If you read this buddy, please make her Wanda.
I kind of sort of maybe have an unhealthy level of interest in super-powerful unstable mutant girls who get written out of stories when writers can’t figure out what to do with them. Bru could win a lot of brownie points with me if he works to rectify this. Which I’m quite certain is his goal.
So, we don’t know for sure that the sorceress is Wanda? Cause it sure looks like her to me.
@bnicholas1 — Her identity hasn’t been stated for sure (and she hasn’t had a consistent ‘look,’ out of costume, for some time now). It seemed pretty telegraphed to me, but apparently there’s a lot of spectulation to the contrary elsewhere.
I’m itching for a good followup to the Scarlet Witch story, so here’s hoping.
<3’s your White Phoenix icon, btw.
@ohcaroline– gr8 review. I’ve been looking forward to this book now that we’re past Messiah Complex (hated Messiah Complex) but anything was an improvement. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who enjoyed seeing the team divided I like that they have their own mini story arcs. The cover made my mouth water, but the story held it’s own too.
