I know that this comic is going to get the usual “I hate Jeph Loeb” reviews, but a reader who approaches it with an open mind will find a lot to admire.   “New Ultimates” is a sweet confection smothered in whip cream with a cherry on top.  By piquing the reader’s interest, it does precisely what an introductory issue should.  There’s a little mystery about the fate of Thor’s hammer.  And then what better way to get our attention than with sex, sex, sex?  This comic is full of sexy couples, some of them surprising.  Tony Stark and Carol Danvers!  Ka-Zar and Shanna!  Thor and Hela?!  Captain America and Zarda?!  I love the awkward way in which Steve Rogers reacts to Zarda’s come on.  By the way, I like that Zarda’s (a Wonder Woman clone) preferred weapon appears to be a battle axe, the favorite weapon of the Amazon warriors of mythology.  I hope we get to see a mix of Greek and Norse mythology as this title continues.

            And what better artist to illustrate a sexy tale like this than Frank Cho?  His women are voluptuous and his men are beefy.  I am very much looking forward to the next issue of “New Ultimates.”
