Like so many people I was put off by the idea of more Jeph Loeb toiling around in the ultimate Universe, But I admit the preview that has been floating about the past few weeks peaked my interest. I read a review of this comic by akamuu before I read it and this lead to me reading it a bit differently than I would normally. I followed akamuu advice and I first just read the narration boxes. While I did not read as deeply into them as akamuu might of I definitely felt for tony on a more personal level because stream of consciousness really made the action really just seem like background noise to Tony’s life.

After the narration read through I went back and read the comic again with just the speech bubbles and the art and I thought it read really well for a first issue. It was paced well, constructed multiple story threads that I find interesting and really honestly made me want to see what happens next, sadly I don’t think I will enjoy the next issue as much because I don’t imagine it will have the same point of view brought by this issue, but this was definitely worth the read to me, Kudos to Loeb on writing a story that engaged me and invested me in the characters and thanks to akamuu for leading on the path of reading it the way I did, don’t think it would have been the same experience else wise.

About the art I feel bad, because It really is quite nice, but I just don’t care for it in conjunction with the ultimates. It feels like we are watching characatures of real people, part of what originally made me love the Ultimates was because there weren’t as many flashy costumes, they had a very practical feel. The most jarring thing to me Thor’s hammer. I don’t like that they reverted it to a more classic look, I like it better when it was huge, looked like it was made for war and Thor needed two hands to swing it. I realize that these artistic changes happened in the last ultimates series, but it jus makes me sad that they are still running with it. There were some costume choices as well, but I want to keep this review spoiler free. So like I said The art is good but really makes me sad in this particular comic.
