It’s a shame that the best issue of 2012 came out this week (more on that later) because this was a huge step in the right direction for Jeff Parker. Last issue saw a bit drop for me because it was such a predictable issue. Now we’re back in ‘Doctor Who’ like plot of the T-Bolts in Medieval times and it was so much fun to read and it was gorgeous to boot.

Seriously, this is some good looking comic book right here. I don’t know if Kev Walker changed his style a bit or Terry Pallot’s inks and Frank Martin’s colors made it really shine but….Damnit this was a gorgeous looking comic book. Whether it’s Troll in the middle of a forest, or the dark dungeon of Camelot; this book had so many great panels and pages it’s hard to count. I particularly loved the effects in this issue whether it be Boomerang’s electric attacks or Satana’s smoke attack. If anything this is probably the best looking issue of this series to date since the change in creators.

But I won’t skimp on the the writing with this issue because it does bring the fun back the series was missing last time. I got a big ‘Monty Python’ vibe early on in this issue and it’s mainly because of The Black Knight. John Cleese’s voice stayed in my head during his dialogue so it made it more unintentionally hilarious then it should be. I’m not even a huge fan of this time period but somehow Parker made it really fascinating for me to read. Especially when you get to the end where we get this new look into Camelot which makes it very ‘Hellboy’ but also so exciting to read for next time.

Everything about this issue was a ball to read. It was fun, it was action packed, and it had some of the best art the series has had to date. Again it’s such a shame the best issue of 2012 came out the same week as this. It could easily have been Pick of the Week for me. At least I am comforted in knowing that this series is far from going down in quality anytime soon.

  1. Totally agree. This was a great issue, and I’m totally digging on the time travel aspect.

    • Ditto. I’ll say it again: This team should never make it back to the present continuity and just keep popping around history.

    • I don’t know. I was digging on the whole, “team of bad-guys trying to do right”, and I liked the character dynamics with Juke Cage. This jumping through time story is heading in a different direction than the one that initially brought me in, and I’m hoping it plays itself out soon.

    • *LUKE Cage*

Sigh. Forgive me, it’s very late and I’m tired.

  2. Thanks for the review. I read the issue today in Grand Central Station. I made notes on iPhone headed home from work.

There is much talk of “pacing” on ifanboy. Thunderbolts #169 was paced well. all the ads came at good times.

    more later-Thanks
