Thunderbolts has kind of been riding a high since Warren Ellis rebooted the title after Civil War. The whole Villains Team angle might seem a little tired in these days of Dark Reign, but through Ellis and Diggle (Barring the Deadpool Crossover) this book has maintained, a psychological tone and a strong sense of dark but solid storytelling. The cast may have changed but it still carried that tone on. Can Jeff Parker continue that?
On paper you'd have to say that giving Thunderbolts to Parker is a bit like asking Chris Claremont to write The Punisher. I'm happy to say that this first issue does Jar THAT badly, but sadly it's far from a smooth transition.
In short, the story tries too hard to be gritty. The characterisations and characters' voices seem off in almost every case. Ant-Man and Paladin are now 'buddies,' the Ghost isn't nearly as sinister, and the internal monologues of Mr X are clearly designed to show you how 'Crazy and f-ed up' he is, but become so over-hammed that it becomes unconvincing fast.
And after the reveal that Scourge IS a modified version Nuke, it seems odd that he neither sounds like Diggle's Scourge nor Nuke here. Instead he's just a generic 'Tough Guy'.
And that worries me.
This issue throws the team into a generic war-zone, in Columbia, where they kill soldiers. Why? Presumably to show that these guys KILL. That's as deep as it really goes, I'm afraid. We know this already. It's not news. It's just misguided storytelling.
Seeing that next issue features Parker's cancelled characters the Agents of Atlas concerns me just as much. I don't see any real evidence that Parker truly has an handle on this team. Yes, they are C-List characters now. But Diggle made them work. and throwing in a cancelled team to try and give the book some kind of boost will not not fix that.
Can't help but feel that after a couple of strong years Thunderbolts just jumped the Shark.
