A lot of people seem to be a little underwelmed by JMS as a writer. Dont get me wrong, he has written some of the best stories I’ve ever read. (The Twelve and Silver Sufer: Requiem) But other times he has written some of the most horrible, poorly plotted stories I’ve ever read (Bullet Points and his Spider-Man run). In my eyes, it seems that more people seem to follow in the line of that JMS is a medicore writer then anything else. But more people need to take into account one of the best runs on Thor in a very long time.

For a long time Thor was gone, he was ‘killed’ and many felt that Marvel stopped using the character. Then in 2007 JMS decided to revamp the character and bring him back to major relevence into the Marvel U. Why do I like this series so much? Well JMS seems to know how to write Old English, hell I’m not even a fan of that type of diaolouge. But the mix of normal, mid-west language and Norse culture is something that somehow works here. Most of the humor comes in because Thor sets his new Asgard in Kansas. One of the best moments of this trade is the new revived Gods going to a local town meeting just for the food.

Not only that but the art is really well done. Very smooth and very detailed. Coipel does a great job with this entire series. He makes every issue worth the price just with the art alone. It really stands out in the moment where Thor (finally) kicks Iron Man’s ass because of all the stuff that happens since he was gone. Whether its a beautiful castles of Asgard, to the jungles of Africa, and the destoried city of New Orleans; everything in this book is just pure gold.

So it’s still a bit of a conundrum on why JMS is such a mixed bag of a writer. His stuff can be so great, like in this series; but other times it’s like he’s never been a writer before in his life. So far this series has not lost it’s step…it’s a little slow right now cause of Secret Invasion but hopefully the main series will come right back and we’ll see more gold from these two guys. So why arent you (cough)especially Josh(cough) liking this series now then?
