At this point, saying that Jonathan Hickman is one of the smartest people writing comics is somewhat akin to mentioning that Brian Michael Bendis writes dialog, or that Alan Moore doesn't like authority. If you're an avid reader of comics, it's a statement you've at least heard multiple times, even if you don't agree with it. So there's some expectation that every Hickman book will have a complicated sci-fi plot that's been throughly researched, and then spun around into a fantastical fictional reality similar to our own.
The Nightly News is one of my five favorite trade paperbacks. While I never read the second volume, I enjoyed the scale and balls of SHIELD. And his run on Fantastic Four and FF inspired me to spend a week going back and reading the old Byrne and Aguirre-Sacasa runs. OK, I haven't loved his recent Image books (Red Wing just didn't engage me as much as I'd hoped.), but I'll pick up any first issue he writes, in hopes of a page turning mind fuck.
In this respect The Manhattan Projects delivered. (In case you missed the warning link, there be spoilers ahead.) A fictional version of Oppenheimer (with an evil twin, no less!) hired by the government to build an atomic bomb. Oppenheimer's twin nearly impedes his involvement due to his involvement in The Communist Party (in real life, Oppenheimer's younger brother, also a physicist, was involved in The Communist Party). While taking a tour of Base Zero, he sees an imprisoned Einstein, and then wards off an attack of "Zen-Powered Death Buddhists". And then a last page reveal (it wasn't shocking, given the flashbacks) that Robert Oppenheimer isn't Robert Oppenheimer at all but is, in fact, Cassandra Nova! Wait, no. Is, in fact, the evil twin, Joseph!
The title of this issue, Infinite Oppenheimers, led me to believe there was going to be similarities between this book and The Council Of Reeds from Hickman's Fantastic Four/FF run. I'm not entirely sure this issue puts that idea to rest. But I'm intrigued enough to keep reading, and imagine this will be, if nothing else, an entertaining balance of smart Hickman, and fun Hickman (his ad panels in Strange Tales were some of my favorite pages from that series).
While I think Marvel has always done an incredible job of matching artists to Hickman's writing, I think Image is only about 50/50. Pitarra is on the good 50%. Cris Peter's colors sharpen a well-drawn, well-laid out book. Unlike the very busy Nightly News, Pitarra gives the story some breathing room, with a few nearly silent pages that speak at more volume than some of Hickman's dialog.

Good to have you back, akamuu! I always looked forward to your (mostly) spoil-free reviews!
Glad to be back. I missed you guys.
I was not to much of a fan or the artwork in this comic. Love the cover tho haha
I almost didn’t buy this one because the artwork seemed kind of mediocre. Glad I did though. The story was great!
