So much of modern physics boils down to probability. We measure particles not based on where they are, but where they are likely to be: Electrons are clouds of probability, and atoms are possibilities wrapped within possibilities, balances of negative and positive forces. Not unlike this comic. It’s got one improbable doozy of a premise: that the Manhattan Project was just a front for more ambitious research, a secret American war of superscience against Japanese killer robots and Buddhist death monks with teleportation powers. Nestled within this is an even bigger doozy of a concept: What if Robert Oppenheimer, physicist and father of the atom bomb, had an identical twin who murdered him, ate him and assumed his identity? The possibilities are endless with an ongoing series like this. Jonathan Hickman, as per usual, builds a complex web of ideas about physics and reality in a story that still moves — and Nick Pitarra is there to back him up with a great sense of action, scale and detail. It’s a mix of elegant, simple Hickman design and textured, tangible Pitarra style that tells a complicated story in simple ways — the colour-coded blue and red flashback panels of the two Oppenheimers, for instance. The art and writing work together to create the twist: that Oppenheimer, whom we see as a mild-mannered scientist in a twee David Byrne suit at the beginning, is potentially a mass murderer underneath — and there may be even more Oppenheimers to come.
