So where is Jeff Lemire taking us with this story? Cause by the end of this (no spoilers, don’t worry) I am intriuged on the twist. It definitely seems like there is more to Gus then meets the eye.

The story is moving at a slower pace again, or at least to say nothing really exciting happened in this issue. But that’s okay with me. Lemire is great at establishing mood and doing great character development. There doesn’t need to be a huge fight scene or even somewhat remotely ‘exciting’ to happen on each page. He creates great moments just in conversation. Like the beginning in the flashback with Jepperd and his wife; I love that moment by the fire. Gives us everyone we need to know about the two with those few pages. Then I like it Dr. Singh is not the typical ‘evil’ scientist or evil at all. Kinda like the character from Heroes; he just wants to save the world and he seems more then enough of a trusting person. I will say the idea of Jepperd trying to kill himself is a bit much now. He wants to end his life but we all know where this is gonna go, so it’s just waiting for the envitable.

Lemire keeps bringing it with the art for this book. Like the story, nothing really ‘jaw dropping’ happens in terms of the art. But that isn’t to say there isn’t some nice techniques or ideas thrown in. The idea of the ‘Grrr’ sound connecting Gus’s dream in the beginning is very inspired, never seen that as a transition before. Great job with the shadows as well in this. Again referencing the flashback, he makes that moment sweeter by making the shadows just right. Unlike in issue two where Lemire seemed to have a hard time with the shadows; here he seems to be nailing it with less mistakes.

I keep saying every time this comes out that it is the best comic on the stands. I believe that because while this wasn’t a groundbreaking issue by any means; there are nice touches here and there you wouldn’t see in other comics. I haven’t read a comic that has that much attention to character development or even the art. Somehow Lemire is able to balance both duties as a creator and makes this an enjoyable comic to read every month. Although it’s only a matter of time before he pulls our heart out again and stomps on it.
