For me, Supergirl has been one of those sleeper titles in the new DC 52. I always sort of forget about it, but when it comes out, I’m really excited to read it. Well, after this issue, they may not be a problem any more, as this was fantastic.

Look, I’m not going to lie. The story hasn’t been lighting the world on fire. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just that it is sort of taking awhile for Supergirl to get her feet on the ground here on Earth. The last few issues have featured the Worldkillers, and while the leader of the group basically narrates the whole issue, she still comes off as a viable foe. Let’s say, it’s Supergirl’s version of General Zod, only she’s got more deadly compatriots and wants to destroy things as opposed to conquer them. The issues ends with Supergirl winning the day, and certainly, leaves it open to these villains appearing again.

But enough about the story. The true star in this issue is Mahmud Asrar. Holy shit did he draw the every living crap out of this issue. It was so incredible. The panels were dynamic and filled with action. There is a bombastic quality to his art that makes every page feel huge and powerful. In his panels where the characters are fighting, you can feel the power of every punch and the destruction is palpable. This book was an artistic tour de force when it comes to superhero action. I’ve been a huge fan of his since Dynamo 5, but I felt like this issue displays his art at the next level. The coloring in the book feels textured and bright, but there’s a subtle darkness to the pallet that helps it feel grounded and serious. Seriously, this book was a visual treat and you owe to yourself to look at it the next time you’re in the shop.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
