I’m not sure how I missed the first issue when this came out, but I regret it. Starting with a spot on parody of Edgar Allen Poe’s Annabel Lee, and then descending into monster madness, this book is a gorgeous haunted house…errr…castle tale. I picked it up for the Corben art, but Strnad’s writing is a perfect complement to it. I’ll definitely be buying the trade of this when it comes out.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Definitely get the first issue, it was great! Glad to know this second issue is just as strong.

Although it’s only four issues, so why wait for a trade?

  2. I grabbed issue one off the shelf and read it right before diving into issue two. I didn’t mean to imply that I was just going to trade wait. I’m going to read the issues as they come out AND buy the trade. The art is just flawless.

    • If I may ask, cause I’m buying it so no spoilers!, the first issue had some weird digital effect to it. Like the faces looked fuzzy….It was still fantastic, but it was noticeable. Do you notice it in this issue as well?

    • @TheNextChampion – I can’t speak to the art in issue #2 as of yet (I will be reading it later this evening), but I can address your curiosity as it relates to the ‘weird digital effects’.

Like you, I was initially ‘put off’ by the blurriness of the apparent use of Photoshop by Corben in the first issue. The effects made the images glow, and at times, appear hazy. However, as Strnad’s story of Ragemoor became clearer, so did the images, almost in a fantastical way. The mild distortion of the art actually elevated the sense of strangeness of Ragemoor. The ‘blurry’ faces now became analogous to the mystery of the characters involved in the tale.

If you get a chance, take a look at Corben’s site. You will see that many of his most recent gallery pieces actually exhibit his use of digital effects.

I too enjoyed the first issue and I look forward to reading more horror and dread that is, Ragemoor. Hope this helped.

    • I agree with absolutely everything Kmanifesto said here. I found the effects an interesting part of the story.

  3. #1 was a surprise…a pleasant one at that. can’t wait to read this one.

  4. Corben is classic horror art. Loved 1st issue. Haven’t got my #2 yet, my comic shop run doesn’t happen until later this evening. I’m in Michigan and assume you guys are on the west coast or New York to be getting em already? I wonder this cause I always see reviews by the fanbase before I can pick my books up, so I usually don’t read them for the spoiler alert factor but read this one cause I was surprised to see it being discussed, its pretty obscure in the grand scheme of comix.

    • @JSAkid – Many of the early reviews you see are often submitted by comic retailers (or employees of retailers) who get their books the previous evening so that they can be prepared (bagged/boarded) for the general public on Wednesday, the official release date. Because they get them ahead of time, those retailers/employees have the benefit of reading them before you or I and, in turn, are able to provide reviews/comments well before doors open.

Hope this helps! I’ve enjoyed Ragemoor too. Would love to hear what you think of issue#2.

    • @JSAKid: Like Kmanifesto said, I work for a retail store, so I get to read the books as I pick them up. I try to never discuss the plot or spoil them, just mention what I (dis)like about the storytelling style and art. And I try to read as many titles as possible so the obscure ones get some attention.

    • Right on, good man, Iove more obscure titles than big ones and its a great time in comics history for that. I always promote my obscure choices at my lcs and most of the customer base including the workers think this stuff isn’t that in demand, national sales charts will prove while they’re not ever gonna be in demand like Batman or Avengers but books like Hell Yeah, Saga, Fear Agent and many others are overlooked by fans stuck in they’re comfort zone. I love me some Spidey and X-men but BPRD, Ragemoor and the Image titles I mentioned above are striking all the right cords with me right now.DC’s The Shade is one of my absolute favorites of the new 52 and whats out period and sure stores aren’t ordering that many copies. Its straight out of James Robinsons Starman run and has that breath of fresh air feeling to it next to a pile of commons. Anyway, thanx both you guys for clearing that up for me, that did cross my mind, haven’t got to Ragemoor #2 but sure I’ll like it. I got two good comix stores near by and only one of them carried The Secret History of D.B. Cooper by Oni Press and I really liked that 1st issue too, you guys check that out?

    • @JSAKid: Haven’t read Secret History yet, but it’s on my list. Love to hear that people have multiple local comic book stores that they enjoy. I’m fortunate enough that where I live in Boston there are eleven comic book stores within reasonable public transportation. And even more fortunate enough to have worked in six of them (five being part of a chain).

Glad you’re loving Shade, too. I just finally got around to reading the Starman omniboo last fall, and loved them from beginning to end.

  5. @akamuu, yeah the Starman Omnibus collection is a great run and why I picked up The Shade. I’m in the Detroit area and have my two shops, ones moved 4 times since I was ten and is one of the best now I’ve ever been in outta quite a few major cities but don’t like to compare a good thing so we’ll just say its one of em’ and the other always has the indie titles at cover price if the other shop didn’t order em or they sold out and a great trade collection and they always look brand new as if they’re immune to shelf wear, between the two I’m covered. Unfortunately Detroit’s suburbs have not the best public transit system, taxis take 45mins to show up, theres no Ltrain or subway, buses are good if your going to the airport, but downtown Detroit has the super cool 30ft above ground people mover, an electric guided subway, its cool if you live downtown but theres no comix shops down there, they have plans to extend the people mover miles in every direction to the suburbs which would be awesome for getting around the city/cities and not just downtown. I’d love to see em do it. I’m lucky to have a cpl shops within driving or bike range.
