(I will be talking about the material in the book, but I didn’t mark as having spoilers since this is only a preview issue anyway.)

Warren Ellis has taught me to expect two things from his work: an interesting premise with amazing writing, and the good chance that the book will be delayed (or maybe I’m still bitter about Fell). And with this series, I already can see the former. Now I’m hoping he disappoints me on the latter. Although only a preview issue (10 pages of comics, which is well worth $1), No Hero #0 gives us the introduction to Ellis’ premise: How badly do we want what we want? What are we willing to do in order to get what we want? And more to the point, what would we do if the ability to gain superpowers was within our grasp?

In this book, a new miracle drug can give us just that, but with a hefty price tag. The drug will literally make you go mad with power. And this is definitely the kind of madness you don’t want, the kind of madness that comes in full force years later, much further down the road than you can see when you make the decision to gain these superpowers. When we want something that bad, looking far off into the future is the least of our concerns. Well, I can say that it is an interesting premise indeed, Mr. Ellis.

As for the art, Juan Jose Ryp has worked with Ellis before (Wolfskin and Black Summer), so right there you have the chemistry worked out. All I can say is, I’ve never seen a man portrayed as hamburger meat that well.

All in all, I’ll be reading this series. Most definitely. (And write more Fell, god damn it.)

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
