Let me prefix this by saying Iron Man is my favorite superhero (yes, I know... shocking after Civil War). Let me also say that of all the Iron Man stories I've read and loved, Iron Man 150 where he and Doom (my favorite villain and overall character) are transported to the days of Camelot is my favorite. That said, given that much of this story is a nod to that classic tale, I can't be too harsh on it.
The opener, truth be told, had me sold immediately. The rest of the story could have been devoted to the intricacies of Ares' bowel movements and I'd still call this issue a good read. I say this because the idea that Doom actually uses the timeslide to spend weekends shtupping Morgan le Fay is just too golden to not like. Besides, way back in Iron Man 150, I could tell those two were ready to pounce on each other and it's a great feeling to be proven right. Granted, le Fay looks a little... harsh... at certain moments, but that could be forgiven. This was a great moment for Doom lore... it once and for all proved what a pimp he is.
Here is where things get sticky. Yes, this issue blew by way too fast and I think a lot of the blame can be brought to the door of Frank Cho. Giving under his pen, Mighty Avengers went from being a monthly to bi-monthly series, a lot of issue space got sucked up in the process, meaning if Bendis plans to have Mighty Avengers crossover with Secret Invasion in time, this story needs to wrap up by April. That means Bendis has to pick up the pace quicker than usual. Typically, a military force FINALLY invading Latveria would warrant an issue and a half at least, maybe a full two under Bendis. Yet, in order for this story to wrap up in time for the Skrulls, everything was compressed to get to the point: sending Iron Man, Doom, and the Sentry back to the Silver Age.
That being said, three two-page splash pages in succession is a bit excessive. This isn't Nextwave here. Some character interaction mid-battle for Wonder Man, Widow, Ares, and the rest would be nice. Simon and Widow in particular has been woefully underexposed in this series. Even the Doom/Iron Man battle, wonderfully executed as it was, felt too short and underexamined.
All in all, however, I think this was a very good issue. Lots of action. Short, but amusing characterization, and an ending that's at least interesting. A major upturn from Fem-Tron to be sure.
