Well... that was weird. It was surely a great read to be had by all, but that was weird.
We should start with Gog. Gog is, like they inferred a few issues back, the last survivor of the Old Gods of the Third World. Gog is also very very happy and smiles all the time He also makes friends with birds and heals sick people in Africa. He even fixes Damage's face. He's a nice god. We don't get very many nice gods in the DCU. It's unknown yet if Gog is running the okey-doke or if the guy is truly genuine, but he sure seems like an interesting character. In a way he seems almost child-like with his "I made them good again" and "I would like to play a game but..." talk. I'm sure, if nothing else, this guy is going to want to be worshiped and that isn't going to sit nicely with the JSA. Either way, this new Gog is certainly a fascinating new character.
There are other nice little touches that peppered this issue. I loved that Gog couldn't see or hear Mr. Terrific (that's sure to be relevant later) because he's an atheist and how Terrific gets frustrated at how Gog won't respond to him but will to a man of faith like Amazing Man, who's quickly becoming one of my favorite new characters. It's just great to see these two play off each other and watch the third smartest man just get annoyed as the faith guy one-ups him of sorts. I also just love the various reactions of the team. Lance and Steel are just happy he helped the village. KC Superman is more curious than anything. Damage is the cynic of the group. Jay looks more in awe than anything. It's great to see all these eclectic heroes and how they respond to this big purple god popping up out of the ground and declaring he wants to make people "good". The bookends of Damage's bitter mumblings about his face coupled the restoration of such was a nice touch by Johns. It's to be seen how Damage is going to take this, but it's so to be a good read for next month. And I'd be amiss if I didn't mention the sidestory of Black Adam. THAT'S going to come up later... and I'm happy because Black Adam rocks.
As always with this series, the art is stellar. Replacing Dale Eaglesham this week is Fernando Pasarin who does this issue well. While this book is very much Dale's book (a bit like how Captain America is Steve Epting), Pasarin fills the job well by being enough like Dale's work yet still bringing his own to the table (like, say Butch Guice on Cap). The work on Gog is appropriately both cheery and kind of creepy. The art is clean and crisp. The writing by Johns is near flawless. This was a really really good issue and I happily await issue 17.
