Let me start off by saying that when I heard about this book many months ago I almost fainted. The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke is by far one of the best stories I have ever read. I picked it up when I got some christmas money on a whim. Let me say best whim ever.

The book starts off with a little explination of how this book fits into the DC Multiverse… It doesn’t. As Rip Hunter says, “Just sit back and enjoy these untold stories from the last heroic age.”

This book had three stories in it. One that dealt with Batman and Superman’s fight that was only hinted at in The New Frontier. This was a story that I wanted to read when I saw the newspaper article that was in the book. I must say it was pretty much everything I hoped for. Seeing Batman and Superman trying to kill each other in a no holds barred fight was great. I also liked how it showed the formation of the ever beloved “Trinity.”

Cooke’s Art as always was fantastic. I really wish that he was either still on the Spirit or was doing a New Frontier monthly. Alas not everyone can have their cake and eat it too. That’s why cake is LIES. His art is simply beautiful and that is the only way to describe it. If you’re not a fan I really don’t understand why not.

The Second Story was a neat little foray involving Robin “The Boy Wonder” and Kid Flash. Was a load of fun or we could say it was a gas. This story did not fit into the general continuity as much as the first story did, but any time I can get Dick Grayson Robin and Wally West Kid Flash, I’m not going to complain. It captured how teens acted during the time with drag races and had such sayings as “uncool.” It also showed how the name for the Teen Titans came up in this continuity and it makes the most sense. I won’t spoil it for you, but it put a smile on my face.

The art for this story was done by a fellow named David Bullock. I don’t believe I have heard the name before, but I didn’t even know that this wasn’t Darwyn Cooke till the second go through. The art was great and familiar. I hope to keep up with this guy and check out what else he has done. Once again, simple and elegant.

Now for the third story. It was short and sweet. I found Wonder Woman to be hilariously funny. She did was she was always meant to do, fight for equality and “love.” There isn’t much to say since this story was only a couple pages long and took mere seconds to read. It was my least favorite and I almost think the book could have done without it. I did find the cameo with Bruce Wayne to be the highlight of the story.

The art for the third story was done by J. Bone. I’m not the biggest fan of his art in this, but was not shocked to see that he was here. He has been working with Cooke for years and I believe at one time Cooke called him his right hand. Something about the art in this story caught me as too cartoony. I’ve heard people joke about Wonder Woman having thunder thighs, but WOW is all I can say for this story.

Overall this was the last thing I read and I was really glad I got it. For my money they could have dropped the third story, and split the first two into two separate comics. I would have most likely picked up both, which would have made DC more money in the long run, but I would have liked the option to just get the first story by itself since I felt it most important. I would have also liked to see more tie ins with the original story, but I’ll take what I can get. Definitely a purchase for New Frontier fans

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

Comments

  1. I agree….it was a great book and worth the 5 bucks.

  2. I didn’t realize that the second story wasn’t drawn by Cooke until reading this… this Bullock guy’s really good! Does he do anything else?

  3. Apparently this Dave Bullock character has really only done some covers for comics such as Teen Titans GO! and Action Comics.  Other then that he is the man that Directed The New Frontier and some of the episodes of the upcoming Star Wars Animated Clone Wars.

Other then this I guess he did a lot of Storyboard Art for different Bruce Timm projects over the years.
